This is an exciting opportunity to join the University of Manchester Counselling and Mental Health Service.

This university-based service is a multi-disciplinary team of Counsellors, Senior Counsellors, Mental Health Practitioners, and other support staff providing a range of mental health support and psychological interventions for both students and staff at the University of Manchester.

You will work alongside the Head of Counselling and Mental Health and the broader team to develop, embed, and maintain effective working partnerships with colleagues, students, and other relevant stakeholders.

The overarching focus is the delivery of high quality psychological and mental health support to enhance student and staff experience.


You will have a professional counselling qualification and/or IAPT training or similar, e.g., master's in counselling; Cognitive Analytic Therapy; CBT.

You will have significant post qualifying experience, a minimum of 3000 post qualifying clinical hours. You will have substantial experience of carrying a caseload of 5 or more clinical contacts per day.

We are looking for someone with a keen interest in working in the HE sectors with up-date knowledge of relevant psychological and mental health interventions.

You will provide brief psychological interventions to undergraduate and postgraduate students. You will have significant training and experience in assessment, formulation, and structured interventions. You will be able to identify significant mental health difficulties and undertake thorough risk assessments. You will be able to work collaboratively and flexibly within a diverse team. You will be BACP, BABCP, UKCP or BPS accredited (or eligible for) or equivalent professional body.

As a Senior Counsellor you will also be expected to rotate onto a Duty role approximately fortnightly.

You will therefore be required to have substantial experience of assessing for and working with risk and complexity within a brief framework.

You will also be confident in taking a lead role in service delivery, supporting colleagues and offering supervision and training as appropriate.
