    The Organisation:


The Equality Diversity and Inclusion Internship based at the University of Sunderland offers an opportunity for someone to gain experience in different aspects of EDI whilst learning more about the work of our wider teams, such as Student Journey, HR and the Student Union.


Main Purpose of Role:


To support the EDI department and University students by providing support, knowledge, and advice about developments in equality legislation and diversity and inclusion best practice.


To contribute to the delivery of equality, diversity and inclusion projects and initiatives across the University and associated recognition schemes.

To support the development of appropriate and relevant Student EDI Policies


Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:


  • Provide support to the EDI Manager and Deputy Director of Student Journey across our EDI Strategy, action plans and major projects to ensure our work has real impact.
  • To contribute to the development of student EDI policies and good practice by undertaking desktop research on existing policies and practice in other universities.
  • Working collaboratively with Communications colleagues at the University, to support student EDI content and ensure consistency of message.
Analyse and report on student EDI data to decision-makers and make appropriate recommendations

  • Collaborate with relevant student networks, societies and USSU officers to understand the barriers that exist within the University and bring these to the attention of the EDI Manager and Deputy Director of Student Journey. In addition, promote EDI activities with the societies that are aligned to the EDI Strategy
  • Make recommendations for staff educational and training plans and programs that support students with EDI activities
  • Conduct research activities in the student EDI space.
  • Work with the finance team to ensure suppliers are set up and paid.
  • To help produce highquality EDI materials and resources such as presentations, guidance documents, and leaflets.
  • Maintain the EDI webpages with Digital Marketing Support.
  • Attend the University's Equality Diversity and Inclusion Group as required.
  • Carry out any other duties which may, from time to time, be reasonably requested within the grade and level of responsibility of the post

Special Circumstances:

Agile working pattern with a mixture of working from home and on site.

Qualifications and Professional Memberships:


  • Recent graduate of the University of Sunderland.

Knowledge and Experience:


  • An interest and a passion for equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Experience of working as part of an effective team as well as on own initiative
  • Demonstratable experience of providing a comprehensive range of administrative support
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering presentations to a wide range of audiences
  • Good ICT Skills in particular, Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrable experience of effective planning and organisational skills, as well as strong attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing
  • Strong problemsolving skills, use of initiative, time management skills and strong attention to detail
  • Understating of issues relating to equality diversity and inclusion in higher education
  • Ability to work under pressure and flexibility in a busy and dynamic environment

Desirable

Knowledge and Experience:


  • Awareness of current developments in higher education including issues relating to EDI
  • Experience of data management, spreadsheets, database and statistics
