Railway Human Factor Consultant


Overview

Their primary role is to ensure the safety, efficiency, and usability of railway operations by considering human behaviour, capabilities, limitations, and cognitive processes.


The technical focus is on optimising railway systems, procedures, and equipment by analyzing human behavior, capabilities, and limitations to enhance and ensure safety, efficiency, and user experience.


Responsibilities

  • Human Factors and Ergonomics Analysis
  • Conduct comprehensive analyses of human interactions within railway systems, considering factors such as cognition, ergonomics, psychology, and physiology.
  • Eliciting Ergonomics requirements and working with project teams to deliver user needs.
  • Conducting Project Ergonomics Surveys including observing current railway signaling tasks, level crossing control, measuring operational workload, impact assessments, Training Needs Analysis and analysing and presenting data to be fed into design activities and presented to clients.
  • Safety Assessment
Identify potential risks related to human error in railway operations and propose strategies to mitigate these risks.

  • Usability Studies
  • Evaluate the usability of railway equipment, interfaces, and procedures to ensure they align with human capabilities and user needs.
  • Undertaking usability evaluations in line with Human Factors standards for equipment/ layout/ HMIs to demonstrate systems support operators to perform tasks in an efficient manner.
  • Training and Education
Develop training programs and materials for railway personnel to enhance their understanding of human factors and improve operational practices.

  • System Design and Evaluation
  • Working with project teams to assess Accessibility and Design for Inclusion
  • Collaborate with engineers and designers to integrate humancentered design principles into railway systems, evaluating prototypes and providing recommendations for improvements.
  • Producing the Concept of Operations to support new/ modified station/ depot design, and conducting Access & Maintenance assessments, room layout & workstation design including Control room design.
  • Incident Investigation
Participate in or lead investigations into incidents involving human factors, providing insights and recommendations to prevent recurrence.

  • Regulatory Compliance
Stay updated on relevant regulations and standards concerning human factors in railway operations and ensure compliance.

  • Data Analysis
Analyze data related to human performance, operational efficiency, and safety incidents to identify trends and areas for improvement.


Qualifications

  • Education
- degree in Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, Psychology, Industrial Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degrees (Master's or Ph.
D.) might be preferred.

  • Experience
- minimum of 15 years of prior experience in railway operations, safety, or human factors analysis within transportation industries.

  • Knowledge
Strong understanding of human behavior, cognitive psychology, ergonomics, and human-system interaction principles as applied to railway systems.

  • Analytical Skills
Proficiency in analyzing data and identifying patterns related to human performance and safety within railway operations.

  • Communication
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex human factors concepts to diverse audiences.

  • Problemsolving
Ability to identify issues, propose effective solutions, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to implement improvements.


Additional Considerations

  • Certifications
Relevant certifications in human factors, safety management, or railway operations can be advantageous. 2. Software Skills

Proficiency in using analytical tools, statistical software, and simulation programs commonly used in human factors analysis.

  • Regulatory Knowledge
Familiarity with railway safety regulations and industry standards.
