Job Purpose
To provide academic leadership in Restorative Dentistry.

The appointee will play a significant role in delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Restorative Dentistry, including Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics.

The post holder will be expected to participate fully in the management of the Section of Clinical Dentistry, and to take on school-level leadership roles as required, within the Dental School.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To actively participate in the design and delivery of a range of teaching, learning, assessment, and feedback activities in Restorative Dentistry, in an environment that promotes scholarly learning for both undergraduate and postgraduate taught students, in accordance with the teaching objectives of the Dental School. This would include delivery of tutorials, lectures, and other didactic teaching activities in addition to clinical teaching. On average there are approximately 90 undergraduate students a year.
  • To participate in the design and delivery of a range of teaching, learning and assessment activities related to Prosthodontics in Glasgow Dental Hospital & School for postgraduate taught students within all restorative mono specialties, in accordance with the teaching objectives of the Dental School. This would include delivery of tutorials, lectures, and other didactic teaching activities in addition to clinical teaching.
  • To be responsible for developing creative and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessments, ensuring that the quality of educational opportunities available to undergraduate and postgraduate taught students is continually enhanced. This will include on an ongoing basis participation in the continual development and review of both undergraduate and postgraduate curricula.
  • To provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning. To participate in student mentoring and student elective programmes.
  • To undertake senior administrative duties associated with the delivery of teaching, learning and assessment and the academic management of the Dental School and wider School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing as determined by the Head of Section, Director of Dental Education and Head of the Dental School.
  • To undertake NHS clinical duties in fixed and removable prosthodontics associated with the post at specialty dentist level.
  • To undertake undergraduate teaching activity at Outreach Centres located out with the Dental School & Hospital if required.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:

A1 BDS qualification and full registration with the General Dental Council of the United Kingdom (GDC).
A2 Fellowship in Dental Surgery, MFDS from one of the UK Royal Surgical Colleges or equivalent.
A3 Higher Degree or equivalent.


Desirable:

B1 Hold, or willingness to work towards, a certificate in Academic Practice, or equivalent learning and teaching qualification.


Skills

Essential:

C1 Ability to deliver research-informed teaching.
C2 Excellent administrative and organisational skills.
C3 Good IT skills including the ability to work in an online environment.
C4 Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
C5 Excellent presentation skills.
C6 Willingness and ability to work as part of a team.


Desirable:

D1 Experience of management processes in an academic environment


Experience

Essential:

E1 Minimum of 5 years post qualification with evidence of clinical experience in Restorative Dentistry.
E2 Experience of delivering undergraduate teaching in Restorative Dentistry.
E3 Experience in academic assessment of dental students.
E4 Significant clinical experience in Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics.


Desirable:

F1 Experience of mentoring students and/or staff.
F2 Experience of delivering teaching at postgraduate level.
F3 Experience of assessment of postgraduate students.

Clinical Facilities

Clinical Dentistry comprises the academic areas of Restorative Dentistry (incorporating Endodontics, Fixed & Removable Prosthodontics, and Periodontology), Paediatric Dentistry, Oral Surgery, Radiography and Oral Medicine.

The Clinics are based on Levels 3 to 7 and underwent significant refurbishment which was completed in 2014. Many of the open clinics in the hospital have been modified to incorporate individual surgery cabins.


Course structure

The BDS course is structured with each year being the unit of assessment and clinical specialties providing teaching within each year as appropriate.


Staffing

Glasgow Dental Hospital and School is the major dental referral and teaching centre in the West of Scotland and as such has a large number of NHS and University clinical staff of all grades.
