We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual, with good communication skills and attention to detail, who shares the Values of West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, to become part of this progressive organisation to join us as a Medical Laboratory Assistant in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratories.


There is a full 24/7 hour acute/urgent service at the Watford laboratory and a Monday to Friday non urgent service provided at the Hemel Hempstead laboratory.

It is essential that applicants can work flexibly according to the needs of the service, this includes weekend work.

There has never been a more exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Major redevelopment works are due for completion by 2025 or soon after.

These will be most dramatic at Watford General Hospital where up to 90% of buildings will be new.


The trust has recently gained 'teaching hospital' status which reflects the dedicated work of many teams and individuals who have set the standard for delivering high quality training, learning and education at all levels of the workforce.

The post holder will work closely with the Biomedical Scientists to observe and implement the policies and procedures relevant to the role.


These include the Blood Transfusion Policy, the Massive Blood Loss Policy, the Infection Control Policy, and the departmental Health & Safety Policy.

The post holder must also comply with practices and procedures as dictated in the departmental Standard Operating Procedures.

Additionally, they will liaise with the Haematology Laboratory Manager, the Training and Quality Leads, and Clinical and Nursing staff to integrate with the services provided by the Team.


The post holder is expected to visit some clinical areas across the Trust in order to facilitate the aspects of the role.


There is a need for some shift and weekend work that necessitates a flexible approach to the hours of employment.
