Applications are welcome for a Research Associate in Space Robotics at The University of Manchester funded by UKSA Enabling Technologies Programme funded project Rappelling and Exploration Robotics for Space Applications (RESA).

This role will focus on the development of a hopping robotic exploration platform and auxiliary tethered descent system for planetary exploration.

Under the guidance of Dr Katharine Smith, the PI for the project, you will be working with a variety of project partners to develop and test prototype system designs.


Key purpose of the role includes:

  • To support research activities in the Space Systems Research group in the School of Engineering focused on Lunar and Planetary exploration with Bioinspired hopping rovers.
  • To support the design and development of the rover platform, including selfrighting mechanism and thrust vectoring system.
  • To support the development of a prototype tethered descent system in collaboration with industrial partners.
