Job Purpose:
The role aims to develop interventions with women and birthing people that experience moderate to severe distress, directly resulting from their maternity, reproductive or Neonatal loss or trauma


The post-holder will:
Hold a qualification that is registered and accountable to a governing body, including NMC, HCPC or BABCP.

Have the ability to offer evidence-based practice in facilitated one to one guided self-help: one to one therapy and group work.

Develop and support innovative practice with Peer Support and Assistant Psychologist colleagues.

Work alongside Primary Care colleagues, such as health visitors and to colleagues in statutory and non-statutory organisations.

In addition, there is a significant case management component to the post and this is an opportunity for a qualified and experienced Mental Health Professional who is enthusiastic and excited by the development of maternal mental health services to share their interest and passion, and to develop these qualities and skills in others.

The post holder will work with people with different cultural backgrounds and ages, using interpreters when necessary and may be called upon to work in various settings (including primary care surgeries and 3rd sector settings).


Principal Responsibilities Clinical:
1. Provide assessment and interventions drawing from psychological theories and techniques.2.


Provide a service that is comprehensive and accessible to a broad range of patients who have experienced trauma and loss, in the maternity, Neonatal or reproductive context.3.

To provide a service that is equitable and non-discriminatory in terms of age, gender, ethnicity and disability.4.

Support colleagues in maternity, health visiting in making appropriate referrals and in carrying out the mental health aspects of their own roles.5.

Make appropriate referrals to other service providers in the statutory and voluntary sectors and redirect patients to other sources of appropriate support within the local community as required.6.

Develop knowledge of the locality and its services and facilities, particularly in relation to mental health issues.7. Provide a service that is flexible as far as possible in terms of clinic hours, medium and location.8. Liaise as appropriate with secondary care mental health services and social servicedepartments.9.

Conduct risk assessments, prepare risk management plans and initiate appropriate action where indicated (including requests for mental health act assessments and referrals to relevant secondary care services).


Supervision and Training: 1. Undertake appropriate clinical supervision on a regular basis in accordance with the relevant professional guidelines and policies.2. Offer training to maternity, local authority and primary care colleagues.3. Attend locally organised and national training appropriate to the work role.

Professional1. Take personal (unprompted) responsibility for achieving agreed clinical activity relating to the number of therapy contact hours per week.2.

To develop an area of interest, to the level whereby the post-holder could become a resource of information for the whole service.3.

Adhere to the clinical policies and procedures of the Maternal Mental Health Service.4.

Maintain appropriate clinical records in keeping with service operational policy.5. Participate in setting and review of objectives for the post on an annual basis.6. Participate in activities of continuing professional development (CPD) on an annual basis.7. Attend professional meetings as appropriate.8.

Ensure that client confidentiality is protected at all times.9.

Develop interactive psychoeducation within a CBT framework, for perinatal wellbeing,to large groups of Service Users under the supervision of senior members of the team.10.

Exercise personal responsibility for the systematic clinical governance of your ownprofessional practice.11.

Proactively take responsibility for attending supervision, case management and line management regularly, participate in objective setting, performance reviews and respond to agreed objectives.12.

Be aware of and comply with the policies, procedures and standards of service.13.

Promote and contribute to the development and maintenance of a healthy therapeuticculture within the service amongst colleagues and Service Users.

Management1. Ensure that staff maintain appropriate clinical records in keeping with serviceoperational policy.2. Ensure staff maintain outcome data as per service operational policy.3.

Ensure that staff participate in setting and review of objectives for their post on an annual basis.4. Ensure that staff participate in activities of continuing professional development (CPD) on an annual basis.5. Participate in audits of clinical activity and evaluative research as required.6. Manage an aspect of the service at the level of direct service delivery.
