Description
Provide support across the business to ensure we meet our planning and environmental responsibilities. Ensure that environmental and sustainability objectives, policies and standards are accounted for in project designs and construction activities.

Create, support and maintain relationships with our environmental stakeholders and approval bodies across the region. Provide specialist advice to obtain planning approval and other necessary environmental consents in support of United Utilities capital investments.


Job Accountabilities:


  • Challenge and influence design teams to produce designs acceptable to consenting bodies, stakeholders, customers, company targets and policies
  • Develop strong working relationships with project teams including contractors and external suppliers
  • Accountable for the delivery of projects within budget and programme to all internal clients
  • Support the maintenance and development of discipline knowledge and expertise. Including the development of environmental standards and guidance notes and contribution to formation of company policies
  • Develop, support and maintain strong working relationships with planning authorities and other stakeholders
  • Represent the company at community consultation events and be confident and knowledgeable speaking with the public
  • Lead the environmental planning input into projects including via the management of external service providers
  • Deliver all outputs to the required timescale and ensure that all, planning and consenting risks to sites and projects are identified and dealt with in an appropriate manner.

Knowledge and Skills:


  • Chartered or prepared to work towards chartership in an appropriate discipline e.g. RTPI, IEMA, CIWEM with some postgraduate or equivalent experience
  • A working knowledge of GIS
  • A good understanding of the UK planning system and environmental legislation in relation to the water and wastewater industry
  • Capable of coordinating a multidisciplinary team to produce successful planning submissions and engagement approaches
  • Ability to influence project teams to produce designs that will obtain environmental approvals including planning approval
  • Ability to support the planning and implementation of effective strategies for gaining regulatory approval for projects including ability to identify, articulate and manage consenting and reputational risks with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to write clear, concise, accurate constraints within contract documents and reports to suit a number of audiences both internal and external
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to check and review documents and reports for both technical and nontechnical audiences (e.g. project teams, design and construction partners, customers, stakeholders and external regulators)
  • Demonstrate technical competence in planning practice including personal development
  • Demonstrate a personal commitment and encourage commitment in others to health and safety in all aspects of work
  • Be able to prioritise and balance large workloads effectively.
