The Head of Rail Commercial is an exciting opportunity to bring the disciplines of procurement, strategy and engineering together to shape our fleet strategy and commercial arrangements.

Leading a direct team of 1 and providing leadership across a matrix organisation in 5 operating companies you will have a chance to make a significant difference through driving collaborative working, looking at total acquisition costs, evaluating environmental and decarbonisation solutions and developing supplier relationships.


Sourcing and Commercial Activities

  • Development of one, three and five year plans, to include plan for individual fleet/sourcing projects, identified costsaving benefits, added value opportunities and timeframes for category development;
  • Scheduling and running regular initiative review meetings with key stakeholders.
  • Continually develop functional expertise and category knowledge ensuring it is utilised across the Group to improve business performance.
  • Managing the delivery of spend analysis and supply market research;
  • Developing a portfolio of market intelligence;
  • Drafting Pre-Qualification Questionnaires, Invitation to Tenders and other tender documentation, directly or by team members;
  • Running tender evaluation and the supplier selection processes

Team Development

  • Managing performance of team members;
  • Workload and resource management;
  • Personal Development Programmes for staff and self;
  • Succession planning

Supplier Relationship Management

  • Accountable for managing relationships with key suppliers within the category, leading supplier relationships management programme and when required conflict resolution;
  • Generating opportunities in order to serve Arriva businesses better;
  • Managing risk to supply and costs.

Driving Innovation

  • Generating an agreed number of new process improvement possibilities through the category management process
  • Delivering an agreed number of new revenue generating ideas via the supply base

Demand Management

  • Reviewing category spend on a monthly basis looking for spend peaks and investigating unusually high spend;
  • Identifying and reducing maverick spend to consolidate all category spend to the designate supplier(s); and

Contract Management

  • Ensuring the availability of data to support supplier performance reporting and reviews;
  • Negotiating any contract changes.

Qualifications

  • CIPS qualified or relevant work experience
  • Educated to Degree level in a business or equivalent industry experience; and
  • Experience working in a train operator or rolling stock manufacturer is an desirable but not essential for the role

  • Category Management & Category Strategy Development
  • Market analysis
  • Supplier relationship management
  • Commercial risk management

  • Knowledge of restrictions associated with supply;
  • Knowledge of technology systems; including Microsoft Office 365 and experience of eProcurement

  • Ability to manage a wide range of supplier relationships, from short term tactical relationships to long term strategic partnerships
  • Strong decision making skills
  • Ability to communicate with impact and engage effectively with senior stakeholders both inside and outside of the Arriva group
  • Excellent negotiation skills
