We are looking for an exceptional individual to join our maternity teams as an advisor for Treating Tobacco Dependence.


Working across departments within North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) and University Hospital Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW), you will have an opportunity to provide strategic oversight and support for the implementation of the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) Tackling Tobacco Dependency (TTD) programme to help reduce smoking in pregnancy rates and improve health outcomes.

This role is suitable for individuals currently working in a clinical or non-clinical setting.


Within this role, you will:


This postholder will contribute to tackling inequalities in health through promoting and supporting pregnant service users, their significant others and families to stop smoking.

It focuses on engaging with people in communities and offering them practical support to change their behaviour to achieve their own choices and goals.


The postholder will provide intermediate targeted smoking cessation support throughout pregnancy and the post-natal period, using the support of interventions such as CO monitoring and Nicotine Replacement Therapy, along with administration of the smokefree pregnancy data collection and collation.

The postholder will work and liaise closely with local stop smoking services as well as local Public Health teams.

The postholder is responsible for acting as a smoke free champion promoting the smoke free message through their day to day work and seeking out opportunities to develop and implement stop smoking services in a range of health and community settings.

Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Post


To plan and deliver stop smoking advice and support sessions, including advice on stop smoking medications, working within recommended protocols and guidelines.

This may involve individual, telephonic, on-line and group work sessions in a variety of settings and venues.


  • Identify and approach service users who are eligible for tobacco dependence conversations and treatment in a variety of different settings. These may be in a clinical area, virtually or in a person's home. Follow service users through their engagement with the service to the location of their care provision in order for integrated care.
  • Develop individually tailored support plans including recommending treatments based on assessed needs.
  • Provide general health, lifestyle advice and support to people using the service e.g. healthy eating, physical activity, stress management. This may include individual and group-based interventions, signposting and referring to other health, community, and voluntary services.
  • Participate in educating pregnant service users, their significant others and families about the benefits of stopping smoking in pregnancy and give support to those service users, significant others and families wanting to quit. Promote smoke free homes and support and advise service users, significant others and families about passive smoking.
  • Deliver Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring to a high standard and engage in the data collection and collation of CO rates in pregnancy and post-partum.
  • Engage with the targeted Smoking Cessation intervention, keeping accurate records and enable good data collection. Maintain accurate up to date and comprehensive records at all times.
