Salary:
£35-£40,000 pro rata per annum (3 days equivalent). Salary depending on experience.

Hours of work:
Normally 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. but flexible arrangements are possible. Note that the role does involve some evening and weekend work. Opera North currently operates hybrid working

The Howard Assembly Room (HAR) Programmer is responsible for the public programme in the beautiful and highly regarded 320-seat Howard Assembly Room, at Opera North.

The HAR is a flexible space, with an acclaimed year-round programme of concerts, gigs, filmand spoken word events.

The HAR currently presents around 80 events a year, divided between external promotions, in-house productions, and presentations by our institutional partners (eg University of Leeds and Leeds International Film Festival).


Main Purpose of the Job


To develop and deliver a year-round programme of public-facing performances and presentations in the Howard Assembly Room (HAR), a 320-seat flexible performance space in the centre of Leeds.

The programme includes gigs from pop and indie to jazz, folk, electronica,global and Americana; classical concerts and recitals; spoken word, and film screenings.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain and develop the eclectic, international and innovative performance programme in the HAR, including gigs, concerts, film and spoken word.
  • Negotiate fees, and work within agreed budgets, to ensure the programme is costed and managed appropriately.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with key promoters and partners locally and nationally.
  • Stay up to date with emerging trends in performance presentation, including audience behaviours, the Leeds music scene and the wider UK gigs ecology.
  • Work with Projects, Technical and Operations teams to ensure the programme is effectively resourced and delivered.
  • Monitor and ensure that the HAR programme is representative of our commitments to equality and inclusion, including gender and global majority representation.
  • Work with Opera North's Marketing and Communications teams to ensure the HAR programme is communicated to the widest audience.
  • Manage, train and where necessary recruit freelance HAR Stage Management and Artist Liaison to enable the effective delivery of particular events.
  • Work with colleagues from the rest of the Projects Team (special Projects, Higher Education and Community Partnerships) to share ideas and initiatives, and develop new projects and performances that maximise the impact of the wider department.
  • Maintain and share an awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion in relation to Opera North and the wider arts sector

Experience and Knowledge

  • Knowledge and experience of curating a public performance programme
  • Knowledge of the music ecology in the UK
  • Ability to build sustained partnerships with artists, agents and promoters
  • Budget management
  • Strong interest in contemporary music across musical genres
  • Knowledge and experience of social media
  • Knowledge of the Leeds music ecology
