Building Maintenance Worker

40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year

Current Salary - £22,192 to £24,120 per annum
Salary dependent on experience and qualifications

Freeman College is based in Sheffield and operates a number of college sites and houses situated in different community settings where students live supported by Freeman College staff.


Freeman College is an independent specialist college educating young people with complex behaviour and learning difficulties including autistic spectrum conditions.

The role can be based in Nether Edge or Sheffield city Centre and there are flexible options for parking


The Building Maintenance Worker's primary role will be to work as part of a maintenance team to maintain and repair our buildings, fixtures and fittings at all Trust sites across Sheffield.


Applicants must have excellent practical skills and a full driver's licence. Must be willing to work flexibly, travelling between the sites and residential houses which are situated in different areas of the city. The core working hours will be daytime during the week, however, the Building Maintenance Worker may occasionally be required to respond to emergency evening and weekend call-outs where necessary, with time taken off in lieu.


The key duties of this role will include:

  • Carrying out all aspects of site maintenance and repairs with the exception of gas and electrical works
  • Assembling and carrying out repairs to office and domestic furniture
  • Carrying out basic landscaping/outdoor maintenance
  • Visiting local merchants to obtain materials as required
  • Responding to emergency call outs possibly in the evenings and at weekends
  • Some caretaking duties

The criteria required to undertake this position successfully include:

  • Experience and practical skills in property maintenance and Health and Safety
  • A team worker who is able to follow instructions and solve problems using their own initiative
  • Experience of carrying out a varied workload ensuring completion of tasks within strict deadlines
  • Having a driving license as you will be required to drive from site to site within the Sheffield area
  • Experience of working in a building maintenance or caretaking role with DIY skills
  • Trade background and experience of repairing school, office or residential buildings would be desirable although not essential
  • Experience of working in a similar type of organisation or with young people/people with learning disabilities would be advantageous
