Main Function of Post:


To be part of a quality Learning Support Team, and to provide support and assistance to identified students to enable them to access both the academic and wider college curriculum working with mainstream and discrete groups.

Key Duties:
Duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Provide high quality learning support that enables students to achieve identified goals. To keep students to task and promote learning.
  • Contribute to the planning of learning support that is inclusive and meets curriculum requirements.
  • Engage students in activities that advance learning for individuals and groups.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with students that promote learning.
  • Communicate effectively with students around tasks and targets for the lesson.
  • Provide support that builds on students' experience and learning styles and encourages and promotes working independently.
  • To work with members of the teaching team to enhance and promote a wellmanaged environment, making adaptations to meet specific student's needs where necessary.
  • To facilitate students understanding of instructions given by the teaching team.
  • Promote, maintain and model behaviour that demonstrates respect for others.
  • To develop selfhelp learning strategies with the students to enable them to cope with their special educational needs.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to learning support and work in accordance with the College quality requirements in relation to assessment and monitoring of student progress.
  • Support students' transition and progression.
  • Provide the Safeguarding team with factual, appropriate information if required
  • Support the tutor if the emergency services are called for supported learners in the classroom and ensure that appropriate College staff in Learning Support and the Curriculum Area is informed of the incident.
  • Work to Directorate and College priorities and targets.
  • Undertaking any other duties within the spirit of the job description and commensurate with the grading of the post.

Role outside the classroom:

  • To participate in lunch duty and supervise identified students during breaks and unstructured time.
  • To support participation in work experience, trips, events and visits by ensuring all involved have a good understanding of any special adaptations which need to be in place for individual students and checking that this is reflected on the relevant documentation which accompanies these activities.

All work in the College involves some degree of responsibility for safeguarding children, although the extent of that responsibility will vary according to the nature of the post.

The post holder must be aware of the College's policies which safeguard and promote the welfare of children, and adhere to their guidelines.

DBS will be required for all roles at the college.
