Research Assistant


We are looking for a research assistant to join the School of English, Communication, and Philosophy on a project looking into the spread of disinformation on social media.


In this role, you will:

  • Collect data from social media sites.
  • Categorise the pragmatic and discourse relations between posts.
  • Conduct analyses and write reports for the project outputs.

This role is eligible to be offered on a blended working basis, meaning that as well as spending time working on campus you may spend some time working from another location, e.g.

This post is full-time and fixed-term for a period of 6 months.


Salary:
£32,332 - £34,980 per annum (Grade 5)

Main function

To contribute to research into the spread of disinformation on social media, including collecting social media posts and categorising discourse relations between them.

You will work within a small team in the Centre for Language and Communication Research at the school of English, Communication and Philosophy, carrying out supporting work that helps lead to the publishing of high-quality research.

To pursue excellent in research and to inspire others to do the same.
Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To undertake research including data collection and data tagging, including identifying pragmatic and discourse features.
  • To conduct a qualitative analysis of the performance of an automatic discourse analysis program.
  • Actively participate within the research group, communicating and presenting research at meetings, through publications and other recognised avenues as appropriate, ensuring information is communicated to internal and external partners.
  • To contribute and support research publications and presentations as required.
  • To analyse and communicate complex ideas, concepts and data using appropriate methods.
  • To resolve issues and support colleagues in devising procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
  • To generate research output and contribute to the development of independent and original ideas as appropriate.
  • To maintain and update area of specialist knowledge.

  • To participate in project administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world.
  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to the position and which will enhance performance.
  • To ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties and to abide by the University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of research methods and techniques within discourse and pragmatics.
  • Proven ability to analyse complex information and summarise appropriately
  • Working knowledge of social media discourse.

Communication and Team Working

  • Proven communication skills, including presentation to various audiences
  • Excellent organisational and teamworking skills

Other

  • Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking within work

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience with data management
