Job summary:


The Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU) is part of the Trading Systems Directorate in the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).

The Unit brings together operational and policy expertise from DBT with advisory teams from the Ministry of Defence and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Its mission is to promote global security through strategic export controls and facilitate responsible exports.


DBT is transforming its export control regime to establish a system that builds on previous success to deliver a "best in class", expert and efficient licensing function which is agile and can respond to evolving external factors.

One of the key areas in this transformation is the Business Management Team, which this role is part of; encompassing the Secretariat, Business Support and Data Teams.


Job description:


Your main duties will be to:

  • Provide support to ECJU Board(s), including disseminating papers, arranging and attending meetings, taking minutes, reviewing and, where appropriate, following up on agreed actions.
  • Respond to Parliamentary Questions and Correspondence within short timeframes.
  • Investigate and respond to Freedom of Information Requests within set deadlines and liaise with relevant internal and external bodies to ensure all information and evidence is considered.
  • Support the Secretariat SEO and the wider team in drafting briefings for senior officials including the Permanent Secretary, Ministers and the Secretary of State.
  • Work independently as part of a team.
  • Work closely with others within the Export Control Joint Unit, colleagues within the Department for Business and Trade and other Government departments.
  • Provide general administrative support to the team, as required.
  • Provide ad hoc support for Senior Leaders, including assisting in the delivery of effective communications and planning of meetings and events.
  • Contribute to the corporate objectives of the department.

Person specification:


Essential Criteria

  • Have excellent organisation and prioritisation skills, good attention to detail, and be able to multitask.
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to draft contributions to briefings to a high quality.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of Ministerial and Parliamentary work and correspondence.
  • Experience of responding to Freedom of Information Requests.
  • Experience of Board Secretariat functions including Minute taking and Briefings.
