The post holder will support the Chief Nurse and Deputy Chief Nurse both at a corporate level and within the division to develop the strategic direction and vision for nursing which maximises quality and safety for our patients through enhancing quality governance, business efficiency, effectiveness, flexibility, and staff morale.

They will support the development of a culture within nursing both corporately and within the Division, which is open and transparent that supports and empowers innovation, creativity and learning both at ward and department level.

The Assistant Chief Nurse will provide strong visible and professional leadership to nursing and allied healthcare staff across the Division and the organisation as part of the senior nursing team.

They will be accountable for the direct delivery of their given corporate responsibilities as well as Divisional responsibilities for the delivery of safe, effective clinical care advising the Deputy Chief Nurse or Chief Nurse together with the Divisional Management Team on professional nursing and other clinical staff groups (AHPs) issues.


The post holder will be the Divisional lead and link for both the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and be accountable to the Chief Nurse on all nursing related matters.

The post holder will be a registered nurse, have clinical credibility and be visible across the organisation and within clinical areas.

Key responsibilities This matrix role will provide the opportunity to maximise the spread of excellent nursing care across the organisation that provides consistency and adherence to best practice.

Together with ensuring within their divisional responsibilities meet the locally agreed goals including KPIs with a particular focus on the delivery of safe, excellent, sustainable care in line with professional standards and national quality standards including the CQC.


Service Provision and Strategic Development The post holder will; Work with the Chief Nurse/Deputy Chief Nurse and senior nursing team colleagues to develop and implement strategic plans for nursing that are then delivered within the Division.

This includes both collaborative and partnership working with other health providers / organisations driving the Health Care Partnership Programme of care.

Working with the Chief Nurse and Deputy Chief Nurse, be the nursing lead on the development and implementation of the end of life strategy for the Trust, together with providing nursing leadership to all IT related programmes of work that relate to nursing and AHPs.

To continuously review, develop and adapt working practice and staffing requirements to enable the Division to successfully change, adapt, and respond to changing pressures, demands and ways of working through the Deputy Director for nursing within the Division.


To lead from a nursing perspective both across their areas of corporate and divisional responsibility, on ensuring that we listen to patients, that we clearly act on what we hear and that we triangulate with complaints, incidents, audits and other relative information to both improve patient care, their outcomes and their experience whilst at The Walton Centre.

To provide a nursing view to the Division when supporting the development of capital plans to meet improved safety, patient experience and quality indicators.

To ensure that services provided on a Divisional or corporate basis are delivered in line with professional legislative and national guidance.

To demonstrate professional leadership qualities that will enable them to influence, negotiate and engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders to improve patient care and nurse leadership.


To work collaboratively with the Divisional Clinical Director and Divisional Director of Operations to provide assurance to the Executive Team and the Trust Board that robust systems of governance are in place and that high quality patient-led services are being developed and delivered.

As part of the business planning process the post holder will provide advice and guidance to the Nursing Team within the Division, on nursing issues.

To undertake relevant Quality Improvement or corporate projects, as requested, by the Chief Nurse ensuring engagement from the whole team.

To empower both their and other colleagues to maximise their potential through a way of working that is inclusive, open and transparent.


Clinical To work with the Chief Nurse in delivering Patient Family Centred Care and outstanding nursing care across the Trust, whilst maintaining the highest standards of clinical excellence To act as a positive role model for clinical teams, working alongside staff in the delivery of a patient centred care To lead and co-ordinate a range of activities that promote excellence in nursing through evidenced based practice and research.
