Job summary:

Finance is at the heart of decision making in the Department for Business & Trade.


The Finance Business Partner team works with the Finance function and across the department and its Partner Organisations to support DBT's ambitious agenda.

The team builds relationships and works in partnership with policy and delivery colleagues as well as other key stakeholders in corporate services and other Departments including HM Treasury, to provide a seamless end-to-end service to customers.


These roles within Finance Business Partner teams will be focusing on in-year budget management and analysis, including budget profiling and forecasting, supporting and providing challenge to business areas on their monthly forecast figures.

It will also include gathering, analysing and presenting in-year management information to inform and support the budget holder's decision-making.


Job description:


Responsibilities are varied but will include:

  • Building detailed knowledge of the areas of the Department and/or Partner Organisations for which they are responsible, understanding the financial and performance drivers, risks, opportunities and issues.
  • Working with the Grade 7s in the team to support financial exercises such as Business Planning and Quarterly Reviews.
  • Supporting teams across finance and the department to produce robust financial forecasts, identifying key risks and opportunities. This includes providing insight to ensure sound financial management and understanding the financial narrative to communicate effectively.
  • Embedding a value for money culture within the department and supporting financial decisions through the provision of advice and challenge to business managers and budget holders.
  • Ensuring that internal control and governance procedures are understood and followed as the first line of defence for financial management.
  • Reviewing detailed financial schedules and plan and coordinate the monthly forecasting process.
  • More generally, the post holder will be required to work in a flexible way and undertake any other duties reasonably requested by line management which are commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post. This may also include working closely with other Finance staff to develop solutions/problemsolve, engaging in project work to drive finance improvements and support the Grade 7s in the team through contributing to financial advice on new spending decisions and policy developments.

Applicants will demonstrate the ability to work across organisational boundaries in order to deliver with strong communication skills, including communicating complex information to non-specialist audiences and influencing the decision making in the business.


Essential Criteria

  • Work collaboratively, quickly building successful relationships with the existing Management Accountants and Business Partner team, and influential relationships with colleagues in the business.
  • Show that you have the skills to provide strategic understanding and can focus on the bigger picture to ensure insight is focused at the right level.
  • Demonstrate the confidence, composure and credibility needed to challenge the way activities are delivered.
  • Have strong attention to detail and excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise a variety of competing tasks.
  • Be a confident user of Excel and have experience of using government finance systems, or a willingness to learn.
  • Recognise change as an opportunity to deliver efficiency and innovation acting as an agent for change when you identify the chance to protect, drive and add value.

Desirable Criteria

  • Be part qualified with CCAB, CIMA or equivalent or working towards qualification.
