Description

We are looking to recruit a part time administration assistant to work with the Hospital Transfusion Team for 18.75 hours per week.

This post offers a rare opportunity for flexible working patterns for the right applicant, once initial training has been completed.

We anticipate that the role will be mainly office based with some trips out to the wards and other hospital departments to access records and patient notes or assist with training.


  • Will always work within their scope of practice and seek advice from appropriate staff as required. They are required to be flexible, dependant on service needs.
  • They must work according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) used within HTL.
  • Will undertake inhouse training, be required to have an understanding of Blood Transfusion Practice and must maintain an uptodate training record.
  • Will understand the importance of maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Will perform essential tasks using the blood tracking system, or other available alternatives, to confirm the traceability and final fate of blood components or products issued.
  • Will assist with the provision of support for users of the blood tracking system.
  • May undertake training, under supervision, of other staff (Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs), porters, etc.) within their area of work practice.
  • Will contribute to quality improvement activities including undertaking audit activities under supervision, implementing corrective actions and preventative actions as directed.
  • Will ensure their Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) training is kept up to date.

Responsibility for Patients

  • Processing work requests in a busy environment while maintaining good working relationships with colleagues and service users in a time appropriate to clinical need.
  • Delivering indirect care to patients by supporting clinical staff in the use of the blood tracking system. There will be occasions when the post holder will be required to visit blood components to the clinical areas.
Responsibility for Policy and Service Development

  • To perform all tasks in accordance with current SOPs and regulations to ensure a high quality service at all times.
  • To ensure Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and GMP is observed in accordance with ISO15189, MHRA and Trust requirements.
  • To assist in the updating of SOPs and associated documents appropriate to their area of practice.
Responsibility for Financial and Physical Resources

  • Will be expected to use laboratory information systems in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Monitoring of cold chain compliance; to include traceability and fate of blood components, and blood products in line with GMP.
  • Responsible for monitoring the safe use of Cold Storage Units within their area of operation.
  • Responsible for maintaining stocks of educational materials for demonstration and training purposes.
Responsibility for Staff

  • Will follow the Trust and Department codes of safety practice.
  • Will be expected to take care for the health and safety of themselves, colleagues, patients and visitors, according to the Health and Safety at Work Act, 197
  • Maintain the knowledge and skills required to perform their role within HTL.
  • Report and escalate (without delay) any accidents, errors, incidents, nearmiss events, risks faults or defects within the department as appropriate
Responsibility for Information Resources

  • Ensure all records and information, including digital data, is maintained in accordance with ISO15189, MHRA and Trust Information Governance requirements.
  • Deal with incoming and outgoing telephone calls.
  • Assist with the maintenance of records using laboratory computer, or manual, systems.
Responsibility for Research and Development

  • The post holder may be required to support validation, clinical audit or research activities for departmental development under the supervision of others.
Physical Skills

  • The post holder will be required to walk around a number of hospital wards in search of physical evidence of transfusion.
  • They will be required to demonstrate advanced keyboard skills to fulfil duties where there is a requirement for accuracy.
Analytical & Judgement Skills

  • The post holder will be required to help extract and analyse statistical data, and make judgements based on those analyses.
Planning & Organisational Skills

  • Planning own workload under the guidance of the Transfusion Practitioners.
