Job objectives and responsibilities
The role is extremely commercially focused, supporting contract managers, operations, and business development teams on our Network Rail contract.

The key to being successful in this role is adding value - supporting growth targets by winning new business with the business development teams, working with operations to ensure we deliver our services as efficiently as possible, ensuring our expenditure is within GMP budget and in line with client expectations and that our working capital management is optimised.

This role will also report to our Network Rail client on a weekly basis.

  • Responsible for producing the monthly management accounts for Network Rail, ready for review with the Finance Business Partner, Head of Finance, Divisional Finance Director and Business Unit Directors.
  • Good close working relationship with the client and operational and commercial teams, providing commercial and financial input where required.
  • Review contract profitability, highlighting high and low variances to client budget for discussion with relevant operational/commercial managers.
  • Responsible for delivering a detailed rolling forecast and annual budget, ready for presentation to senior management.
  • Act as the link between operations and central finance functions to drive a customer service culture.
  • Act as Soft Services main finance contact for Network Rail

Main duties

  • Ensure the timely and accurate completion of the Network Rail contracts to ensure integrity, accuracy, consistency and providing clear visibility of the financial health of these contracts.
  • Ensure the accurate accounting on accrued and deferred income on a monthly basis, with clear visibility and communication to the business on noncurrent debt.
  • Understanding and challenging current business practice, identifying and implementing initiatives to improve process and deliver business growth objectives.
  • Partnering with the business leads and Account directors / managers to prepare full annual budgets and periodic forecasts for the trading and profitability of the contracts.
  • Close working relationship with OTC teams to ensure accurate and timely billing, efficient payroll reporting and driving improvements in the working capital.
  • Being proactive in identifying and implementing added value opportunities.
  • Detailed financial analysis and presentation of financial information to support decision making.
  • Ad hoc analysis and presentation of complex financial information in response to senior management requests.
  • Work closely with the Divisional senior management to help drive business performance and provide high quality financial information.
  • Develop and report KPI's relevant to the business.
  • Identify and drive financial efficiency ensuring the correct allocation of the Division's resources.
  • Provide objective challenge to the Division's performance and plans.
  • Provide forward looking insight utilising experience of the past and utilising financial and business skills.
  • Undertake contract profitability analysis, providing insight to Operations on opportunities and risks.
  • Support business adherence to group financial governance processes.
  • Manage Network Rail GMPs, ensure these are up to date and all monthly reporting is current.
  • Present any changes to GMP to the client as incurred.
  • Manage monthly costs versus GMP and maintain clear and precise historical data
  • Responsible for all adhoc finance requests from Network Rail, to be delivered in timely manner
  • Attended weekly operations meetings at Network Rail.

Person Specification

  • ACCA, ACA, CIMA, CIPFA qualified, ideally with 3+ year's commercial experience.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Influential and motivational leadership capability.
  • Good commercial skills with the ability to sit in front of a key client and talk about our mix of service lines.
  • Experience of working in a fast paced environment and ability to prioritise a changing workload and use initiative.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to present complex financial information to nonfinancial individuals.
  • High level of integrity with a commitment to embedding a strong governance culture.
  • Previous business partnering experience within the retail industry and knowledge of the sales pipeline/bid process would be advantageous.
  • A hardworking individual with lots of energy, who can deliver high quality work to tight reporting deadlines and demonstrate desire to progress within the company.
  • Able to produce concise and informative reporting under tight deadlines.
  • Flexible working and to be able to travel around the UK
  • Mandatory 1 day per fortnight in Northampton office.
