Description

In collaboration with the Quality Assurance & Improvement Lead Midwife and Maternity Clinical Governance Lead, facilitate the ongoing development and implementation of robust systems and processes within the service in relation to assurance and improvement activity which underpins safe clinical practice.

In collaboration with the Quality Assurance & Improvement Lead Midwife, Maternity Clinical Governance Lead, and Consultant Obstetric Lead for Clinical Governance, co-ordinate and help to deliver the clinical assurance and improvement agenda within the Maternity Directorate, linked to the following work-streams:

  • NHSR Maternity Incentive Scheme
  • Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle
  • Care Quality Commission (CQC)
  • NICE Quality Standards
  • Quality Improvement Programme


Assist in the building and development of information resources pertinent to clinical governance and quality by assembling and analysing quantitative and qualitative information (with directorate and service leads).

The appointee will be line managed by the Quality Assurance and Improvement Midwife.


To support the Quality Assurance and Improvement Lead Midwife in delivering the quality assurance and governance agenda for the Maternity Directorate.


Work alongside the Quality Assurance & Improvement Lead Midwife and Consultant Obstetric Lead for Audit to develop and implement an audit programme that supports the needs of the organisation, including all mandatory audits identified by the Trust Clinical Audit Lead.


Assist the Quality Assurance and Improvement Midwife to communicate and facilitate implementation of relevant local and national guidelines, initiatives and policies - confirming adherence and staff compliance.


Liaise and negotiate with clinical staff, at all levels, to agree and support methodologies for capturing data related to improvement projects.


The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

Specific Responsibilities

Quality Assurance

  • To support the Quality Assurance and Improvement Lead Midwife in delivering the quality assurance and governance agenda for the Maternity Directorate.
Liaise and negotiate with clinical staff at all levels, to develop methodologically rigorous processes for capturing and recording evidence related to the following standards:

  • NHSR Maternity Incentive Scheme
  • Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle
  • NICE Quality Standards
  • External inspections including the Care Quality Commission (CQC)
  • Assist clinical leads in developing appropriate outcome measures/ quality priorities to be monitored on an on-going basis in order to assess and develop the quality of services provided.
  • Ensure all relevant NICE guidance is considered and level of compliance agreed. Where partial compliance is agreed - support the management team to complete a risk assessment/ service development plan. Review on a yearly basis. Where the service considers that they intend to be non-compliant support with a development of a position paper for the Trust Clinical Governance Board.
  • Support Clinical lead to coordinate the Local Audit plan - ensuring update of the reporting system to reflect the progress and learning. Provide auditors with a certificate on completion of audit for validation purposes.
