About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF AWARD-WINNING CARBON SAVINGS ON HIGHWAYS PROJECTS

The Finance Team in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories, where we go above and beyond for our residents - in all sorts of pioneering ways.

By being smart and courageous with the council's finances we can achieve more for our residents and wider society, especially when working closely with other council departments.

Our approach to responsible procurement and the way we work collaboratively with our suppliers can bring significant benefits, including huge reductions in environmental impact.

Take the award-winning Kings Street footway scheme.

This was the first scheme of its kind in the UK to switch all possible high carbon materials and equipment for zero and low carbon alternatives.

This included using electric tools and excavators, low carbon foundations, concrete and paving and zero-emission deliveries to site. The result? a 79% carbon saving compared to traditional techniques.

And why does this success matter? Because Kings Street has formed a blueprint for future projects.

Its success has been translated to five further paving schemes, which have achieved savings of up to 94% operational carbon against comparable sites.

A subsequent resurfacing project in Third Avenue achieved another UK first in its use of 85% recycled material on the roadway.

These schemes demonstrate that partnership working with our suppliers can help us meet the councils net zero carbon targets.

The Role:

As a Sustainable Procurement Officer, you can make your own powerful contribution to Westminster's financial decision making by ensuring we take our responsibilities to the environment seriously when buying goods and services.

We'll look to you to champion carbon reduction within our procurement, commissioning and contract management activities.

You'll be a key point of contact between the council and its supply chain partners, driving new low carbon pilots and ensuring we work together to reduce carbon emissions.

You can expect to collaborate closely with our Climate Emergency team, accessing their expertise in achieving our net zero targets.

Advising local priority enterprises such as small businesses and charitable organisations on how to be low-carbon suppliers to the council will be an important part of your work.

This is a brand new role where you can make a real difference.

Your key challenge will be to strike the right balance between our carbon reduction ambitions and commercial realities in a complex supply market.

You will need to understand the differing priorities of each council department and make a compelling case for the importance of factoring carbon into their procurement decisions.

Please refer to the
Job Description** for more information.

About You:

You'll combine a passion for sustainability and environmental protection with good commercial sense and an innovative approach to finding solutions.

You're likely to hold or be working towards a professional qualification in either purchasing and supply or environmental management.

Your ability to build effective working relationships, navigate political and commercial sensitivities, and influence others will be critical to your success.

Adaptable yet pragmatic, you'll be able to balance competing priorities and switch seamlessly between gathering and analysing data, looking at the commercial viability of new technology and equipment, and coaching local enterprises.
