Target Malaria is looking to recruit an Assistant Communications Officer to join the Global Communications Team.

The Global Communications Team is responsible for designing and implementing the global communications strategy, managing media relations and social media, coordinating communications campaigns with global stakeholders, coordinating Target Malaria's support communications officers across the consortium, managing crisis communications, and suggesting internal communications initiatives.


You would provide support to the Global Communications Manager and to the Communications Officers in other collaborating partner institutes throughout the Target Malaria consortium.

You would work closely with a communications officer and a graphic designer in the global communications team.


We are especially keen to hear from students currently enrolled in their university degrees or recent graduates (undergraduate and graduate).


A deep commitment to Target Malaria's mission of developing and sharing new, cost-effective, and sustainable genetic technologies to modify mosquitoes and reduce malaria transmission is required.


Duties and responsibilities:


You will play a critical role in the communications team, supporting the implementation of Target Malaria's social media strategy and in highlighting the projects' three pillars: Science, Regulatory Affairs and Stakeholder Engagement on social media.


The role will be part of the communications team, providing support to the communications officer responsible for social media in the development, planning and implementation of content for social media (website, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube for now).

Social media management (60%)

  • Contribute to drafting and publishing content for Target Malaria's social media channels adapting for specific channels and audiences, keeping tone of voice in mind.
  • Support communications officer in monitoring social media posts and respond to comments, messages and queries received over social media in consultation with the communications officer.
  • Support communications officer in the planning and implementation of social media campaigns done by Target Malaria or partners, working collaboratively with colleagues at Imperial College, other institutions among the consortium and in the malaria community.
  • Maintain expertise and awareness of social media trends and sector developments
  • Ensure social media content and campaigns meet Target Malaria brand and style guidelines

Administrative duties:
(20%)

  • Provide administrative support to the social media team on priority tasks.
  • Create and maintain content calendars for social media channels.
  • Help to coordinate meetings by preparing agendas, arranging diary invites, and producing presentations.
  • Conduct regular audits of social media accounts and ensure the Social Media Workplan is up to date.
Monitoring and Evaluation (20%)

  • Monitor and evaluate social media activities.
  • Regularly log and report on social media metrics and analytics.
  • Support reporting for social media and video as required.
  • Assist with benchmarking as required.

  • Educated to A level or equivalent experience
  • Excellent writing skills in English
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Diplomacy and respect for other cultures

Target Malaria is a not-for-profit research consortium that aims to develop and share new, cost-effective, and sustainable genetic technologies to modify mosquitoes and reduce malaria transmission. We cannot win the fight against malaria alone and our aim is for the technology to be complementary to current malaria efforts.
This is a high-profile research project working on an innovative genetic technology and is currently anticipated to be the first evaluating a gene drive mosquito for suppression of malaria vectors.


The project started as a university-based research programme and has grown to include scientists, stakeholder engagement teams, regulatory affairs experts, project management teams, risk assessment specialists and communications professionals from Africa, North America and Europe.

We currently work with 11 different partner institutions, and we have over 200 project team members. The project receive core funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and from Open Philanthropy.
