This is an exciting opportunity to join our dedicated Museum team, who offer a warm welcome to visitors from our local communities and from further afield.

Reading Museum is based in the Victorian Town Hall right in the heart of the rejuvenated Abbey Quarter.


Every year over 110,000 visitors enjoy our galleries displaying everything from Huntley & Palmers biscuit tins and archaeology from Roman Silchester, to our famous Victorian copy of the Bayeux Tapestry.


Customers also come to enjoy our temporary displays, exhibitions, interactive schools workshops, a varied programme of family activities, and to visit our shop.


About the role

Key responsibilities will be to:

  • Manage the visitor service team and volunteers, including resolving daytoday operational issues and manging team rotas.
  • Ensure performance management (including 1 to 1s, team meetings and annual appraisals).
  • Ensure the submission of monthly timesheets and sick forms to payroll.
  • Monitor gallery spaces and displays, ensuring high standards of presentation.
  • Manage the Museum shop and stock.
  • Plan and deliver the programme of activities in the service's 'What's On' diary.
  • Promote events via our social media, blog, website and to liaise with colleagues across the Museum and Reading Arts marketing.
  • Monitor and respond to customer feedback, liaising with relevant colleagues or teams.
  • Collect and collate quarterly visitor statistics/performance indicators.
  • Manage and promote communication with other teams, including the compilation and circulation of the Museum weekly briefing.
  • Develop effective partnerships with Council and external partners.
You will report to the Museum Manager and be a full and active member of the wider Museum team.

  • Your role includes managing the visitor services team, ensuring an efficient and welcoming customerorientated experience, delivering high standards of customer care, and the safety and security of visitors and exhibits
    .
