Description
Identify newborn babies who require screening by checking the NHSP database and liaising with maternity staff. Assist in the set up and preparation of equipment and daily calibration. Meet and greet the patients into the department.

Undertake hearing screening procedures on newborn babies and neonates in appropriate clinical settings using specialised equipment bespoke to the programme.

Following the screening test, accurately record the clinical outcome and test result on national and trust IT systems. Refer to senior staff if patient requires further advice or assessment. Managing clinical workload to ensure effective use of resources within area of responsibilities. Work closely with senior clinical staff within the Audiology service to maximise patient care.


Proactively keep parents, team members and other health care professionals informed of all relevant and appropriate information in relation to the Trust protocol and the National Newborn Hearing Screening Programme.

Impart relevant information to parents of newborns, regarding consent, screening and screen outcomes. The ability to answer parents questions regarding screen and outcomes. Be able to offer a sensitive and empathetic caring approach when circumstances dictate.


Promote a professional, welcoming and caring environment to facilitate a Family Friendly approach with all parents and health care staff.

Maintain up to date knowledge of procedures and policies relevant to the post. Always maintain the confidentiality of the babies and their families.

Ensure the safety and security of all equipment and report any problems to the Hearing Screening Co-ordinator at the earliest opportunity.

Ensure that patients and their families are treated with dignity and given privacy, respect and individuality at all times. To be aware of Child Protection issues and to adhere to local procedures. Monitor and place orders of consumables and stock to delegated officer to ensure effective service delivery. Undertaking appropriate clerical duties commensurate with post to ensure effective service provision.
