As Chief Statistician you will be legally responsible for ensuring that all official statistics published about Scotland are trustworthy, high quality and have an impact in improving decision making

Job description:


This is an exciting role with responsibilities that play a key role in the effective operation of Scottish Government.

The Chief Statistician plays a key role in the following:

  • Giving direction, setting strategy, and building an official statistics community in Scotland;
  • Setting statistics policy and standards across Scotland;
  • Managing the statistician workforce through recruitment/promotion/deployment, and learning & development
  • Coordinating our household surveys
  • Leading policy on data access and linkage for research

Some of the Main Responsibilities include:

  • Scottish Government's primary advisor on statistical matters
  • An active member of the Digital Directorate Senior Management Team
  • Providing leadership to the official statistics community in Scotland building the confidence and trust in Scottish official statistics
  • Setting the strategy for official statistics in Scotland, building collaboration with the 30 or so organisations that produce these statistics.
  • Setting policy and standards for official statistics in Scotland
  • People management for statisticians in Scotland: organising recruitment, progression, and programmes of learning and development.
- identifying developments in the way statistics are collected, managed, communicated and shared, leading transformation programmes to improve the way this is done.

  • Co-Director of the Administrative Data Research Scotland programme
  • Developing policies around access to and linkage of data for research


The key outcome from this role is to build the skills, analytical and data infrastructure that improves economic, social, and environmental wellbeing and reduce inequalities through better use of data and evidence, saving time, money and lives.

Essential Criteria

  • Please note, this role requires a person who has operated in a senior statistics leadership role, with responsibility for setting statistics strategy in an organisation with complex requirements, which has gone through a significant period of change._

Specialist Criteria

Professional leadership & delivery
Successfully leading, and developing a Statistics function at scale and implementing a step-change in statistics and analysis capability within a large or complex organisation;
Leading programmes that deliver value or efficiencies through better use of data and analytics

  • You will also be expected to demonstrate that you meet the requirements of the core skills in the Scottish Government Leadership Framework at SCS pay band 1:_
