The post holder's main role is to provide day to day co-ordination and supervision of the specimen reception area staff within Clinical Pathology, ensuring effective provision of services to the scientific and medical staff of the department.

In conjunction with the Pre-Analytical Leads, manage all aspects of Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) staff, produce work rosters and allocate staff to the roles required on a daily basis.

The post holder will be responsible for the output of the reception area in either City or QMC campus.

Overall responsibility of Medical Laboratory Assistants in the absence of the Pre-analytical Lead

Assist the Pre-analytical Lead in HR functions, including recruitment, selection and monitoring of Medical Laboratory Assistants in areas of responsibility


Liaise regularly with line manager and other professional and scientific staff regarding the operation of the Reception areas, including the resolution of problems, issues and performance.

Assist the Pre-analytical Lead in planning the work of the Reception areas including staff rosters, prioritisation of workload and troubleshooting problems

Assist the Pre-analytical Lead in managing and training the Medical Laboratory Assistants to perform sample reception duties including the receipt, barcode labelling and preparation of sample analysis

Assist the Pre-analytical Lead in reporting Air-Tube System breakdowns and issues to appropriate Operational Manager

The NUH NHS Trust is a large, busy teaching hospital comprising of two sites, the Queens Campus and the City Campus.

The Queens Campus provides acute services supporting a very busy emergency service and trauma centre and the City campus supports Clinical Haematology, transplantation, stroke and cardiac services.

Clinical Pathology operates across both sites and is key to the patient pathway.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Support the supervision and training of the specimen reception team.

Assist with HR functions including recruitment and selection of MLA staff.

Identify upcoming staffing shortages and escalate these to the specimen reception management team.

Act as point of contact for the specimen reception department for service users and clinical pathology staff.

Training and Qualification

Essential criteria

  • Attained or working towards a UFD in Pathology or holds equivalent qualifications, e.g. science degree, IBMS Certificate of Achievement part
  • Knowledge and ability to use Windows based IT systems
Experience

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise workload for themselves and others.
  • Experience of data entry on IT systems
  • Experience in a healthcare setting
  • Experience of supervising staff
Desirable criteria

  • Work experience in Pathology
  • Experience of writing Standard Operating Procedures and or other lab documents

  • Able to provide and receive information in various forms with colleagues and other Trust staff.

The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
