Description

To provide clinical leadership to and expert medical management of older patients with both femoral fracture and major trauma, along with the 3 ortho-geriatricians already in post and to work alongside the Major Trauma team in further developing the interface between Geriatric Medicine and Ortho-geriatrics.


The 4 consultants including the new post holder will participate in rolling out in reach into laparotomy patients aged over 65 at UHNM, in line with guidance from NELA audit, which recommends this input.

In addition, the post holder will work with the other Geriatricians providing a service for older people within the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust.


The post holder will work across Geriatric Medicine and Major Trauma and Ortho-Geriatrics (femoral fractures), within a team comprising of the existing 3 Consultant Ortho-Geriatricians, along with the other specialities caring for major trauma patients.

These include orthopaedic surgeons, spinal surgeons and neurosurgeons and specialised rehabilitation physicians, providing a comprehensive service within UHNM.

Roll out of in reach into laparotomy patients will be required. The post holder will be expected to play a role in the development and evaluation of the service.

Initially 3 sessions a week will be provided by one of the 4 Consultants; this will be reviewed 6 months after it has been rolled out.


You will be expected to work with other members of the Elderly Care and Orthopaedic teams to provide first class clinical care.

You will provide clinical leadership, including all aspects of the elderly care service and you will be expected to supervise and teach junior medical staff and nurse practitioners/clinical nurse specialists.

You will be involved in teaching Year 3 Undergraduates from Keele University.

Duties and Responsibilities (Geriatric Medicine)


Provision of cover to your base acute elderly care ward, currently is 76B, in conjunction with 2 of the ortho-geriatricians, attendance at daily board rounds, as required, on your base ward.


Cover for FEAU will be 1:9 08:00hours-17:00 hours weekdays, 1 weekday every 9 days from 17:00hours-20:00hours and 1:9 weekends 08:00hours-15:00hours.

Bank holidays 1:9 08:00hours-15:00hours.

Participation in rapid access clinics, which offer GPs fast-track assessments of older people and access to rapid tests.

Provide cover for an agreed complement of wards for a specialist opinion on older patients.


In addition, to contribute to General Medicine admissions by doing Short Stay Ward rounds at weekends from 9 am to 2 pm and to the on-call consultant rota for Medicine by providing telephone advice in the evenings and at weekends to the medical registrar on-call (as per job plan).

Duties and Responsibilities (Orthopaedics)

Major Trauma Geriatrician


Provide input to management of care of patients, of 65 years or older who have sustained significant injuries resulting in major trauma, ranging from head injury and spinal injuries, including cord, as well as orthopaedic injuries.

Major Trauma does not include those with an isolated neck of femur or femoral fracture. This service started in July 2020 at UHNM.


The ortho geriatrician sees all newly admitted Major Trauma patients aged 65 and over fulfilling eligibility criteria, as soon as possible after admission, and does an initial assessment in conjunction with one of the six rehab coordinators.

If the patients develop new medical problems after admission during their hospital stay, they can be reviewed again at the request of the ARTU Team, Neurosurgeons or thoracic surgeons.

4 sessions week in major trauma are provided by the 3 Consultant Ortho

  • Geriatricians at present and the new post holder will also be involved in this.
To support the surgical and acute rehabilitation specialities in optimising the medical management for these patients.
