The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a unique attraction in south east London where world cultures and the natural world are brought together for everyone to enjoy.

The Museum holds internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as a popular natural history gallery and Aquarium.

The 16 acres of beautiful Gardens feature a tropical Butterfly House and offer stunning views across London.


The role:
You will support the Head of Fundraising in developing and administering income from individuals and sponsors.

Your key areas of responsibility include the management of the Benefactors scheme and events, appeals - including preparation for a major capital campaign, legacies and online giving opportunities and the coordination of on-site giving opportunities.

You will also oversee the effective administration of fundraising data and finance and you will play a key role in the set up and migration of data from various sources to our new CRM database Tessitura and the creation of a process manual.


This is a varied role for a fundraiser with broad in person and digital fundraising skills, preferably acquired in the cultural sector, offering the opportunity to develop their experience and work on a range of projects and tasks as part of a supportive and close knit team.

The role would suit a confident self starter with good problems solving skills and the ability to quickly form friendly and positive working relationships to help them achieve their goals.

Section description


The Communications and Income Generation Directorate (CIG) is one of four Directorates at the Horniman and comprises fundraising, membership, marketing and communications, digital, events, visitor experience, commercial and admissions activities.

The Fundraising team's key objective is to generate income in support of the strategic aims of the Horniman.

It is responsible for all fundraising which contributes towards the delivery of various priority projects, activities, collections development and capital campaigns as well as the day-to-day care of our collections and Gardens.

We raise money from individual donors, trusts and foundations, public funders, corporate sponsors and businesses.


Main responsibilities

Main responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Individual giving (35%)

  • Support the Head of Fundraising to deliver individual giving campaigns
  • Develop and manage the Benefactor scheme from recruitment to stewardship to renewal and retention
  • Deliver an ongoing programme of stewardship communications for Benefactors and individual supporters that features staff and activity from across the Horniman
  • Plan and deliver a monthly programme of events for our Benefactors, and significant donors and prospects including drinks receptions and behind the scenes tours with curators and other specialist staff
  • Manage onsite giving opportunities, in particular the donation boxes and contactless giving points, recording and reporting income levels and trouble shooting any device issues
  • Work with the Head of Fundraising on the private phase and preparation for the public phase of Nature + Love capital campaign. Set up private and public Donorbox widgets and donation pages in liaison with
