Job overview:


Our Major Trauma Centre at Salford is the principal receiving site in Greater Manchester for people who trigger prehospital Major Trauma activation and one of the busiest adult major trauma centres in the UK.

The Emergency department receives approximately 1200 major trauma calls per annum, and a high proportion of patients with elevated Injury Severity Score ISS>15 require critical care admission.

Our Major Trauma Service is led by a dedicated co-ordinator service and consultant of the day.

The wider MDT consists of consultants and registrars drawn from emergency medicine, anaesthetics, intensive care, neurosurgery, general surgery, orthopaedics & plastics and radiology services.

Emergency Department trauma care is consultant-led, with an on-site 24/7 Trauma Team Leader (TTL).

The department has links with the North West Air Ambulance, with 5 of our consultants working clinically for this service.

The department runs regular teaching in trauma case management and a European Trauma Course (ETC) is run on-site annually.

(Primarily based at Salford Royal Hospital, with possibility of some activity at other sites)


Main duties of the job:


This is a 12-month fixed term appointment for a senior or post CCT fellow to work with the Emergency Medicine Directorate within the Salford Care Organisation of the Northern Care Alliance.

There will be an option to extend the contract to 36 months dependent on progress and mutual agreement.


In addition, the successful applicant will be supported with 50% funded academic time to help deliver a broad established portfolio of NIHR Trauma and Emergency Care research projects, engage with the national Trauma Audit and Research (TARN) network (hosted in Manchester) and develop their own individual research interests.

Qualifications, Registration and Courses:


Essential criteria:


  • Medical degree
  • GMC registration
  • A minimum of 36 months postgraduate training in acute care specialties (EM/Anaesthesia/ICM)
  • Portfolio evidence of clinical skills commensurate with ST3+ training in acute care
  • ATLS / ETC provider
  • Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Evidence of critical appraisal and/or research methods training

Desirable criteria:


  • FRCEM, or equivalent
  • Formal qualification in medical education
  • Evidence of formal academic training and/or postgraduate qualification in clinical research
  • GCP training
  • Associate PI Scheme credentialling
