The Role
The Financial Times is looking for a new Banking Editor. Banking editor is one of the key positions at the heart of the FT.

The job combines the role of team leader, heading the financial services desk in London, with a chief reporting function, coordinating our coverage in the UK, across Europe and globally.


The busy beat encompasses some of the highest-profile and most accident-prone companies that feature in the newspaper, which are constantly under threat from macroeconomic shocks, new challengers and toughening regulations.

The new Banking Editor will take over at a time of great change.

While profits have been boosted by the first meaningful interest rate rises in a decade, most lenders in Europe still suffer from depressed valuations and questions over the viability of their business models.

Despite repeated attempts, few transformational M&A deals have been struck. The full impact of Brexit on the City of London is not yet clear.


Traditional banks are also under threat from fintech startups and encroachment by Google, Apple and Amazon, as well as the rapid growth of the lesser-regulated "shadow banking" sector of giant asset managers, private equity firms, hedge funds and family offices.


The ability to deliver scoops on multiple running stories, spot themes regionally and globally and write quickly and accurately are essential.

The role also requires close collaboration with the US and Asia-based reporters to cover Wall Street and its operations around the world.


Recent highlights from the team include the minute-by-minute chronicle of the collapse of Credit Suisse, an investigation into the links between Barclays chief executive Jes Staley and Jeffery Epstein and an activist attack to break up HSBC.


Key responsibilities

  • Lead the FT's banking coverage
  • Produce scoops and deeplyreported analysis; contribute longform pieces for the Big Read and magazine; appear in FT podcasts and documentaries
  • Run the financial services team (spanning banking, fintech, property and insurance); set priorities for colleagues; spot and recruit new talent
  • Chair the annual FT Live Banking Summit in London
  • Weekend shifts required as part of the newsroom rota

How we work
Our hybrid setup means staff are expected to come into the office 3 days a week.

Our office is located across the street from St. Paul's Cathedral and is easily accessible from all corners of London.

There are the main train terminals such as Liverpool Street, Moorgate, Blackfriars, City Thameslink or Waterloo all situated within walking distance or there are several tube stations within a few mins walk such as Mansion House (District or Circle line), St.

Paul's (Central line), Bank (Central or Waterloo & City line) or Barbican (Central, Hammersmith & City or Metropolitan lines).
