Experience

This internship was a chance to conduct research on a project for 8 weeks. The project I was involved in was about the role of P2X7R in the NF-kB signalling pathway in prostate cancer.

I began by learning the lab techniques required for the project under supervision until I was confident enough to independently plan and carry out experiments. Key lab techniques included tissue culture, protein extraction, Western blotting, and the relevant statistical analysis. Lab work involved a mixture of following experimental protocols, as well as designing specific treatment conditions after conducting extensive literature research.

Data was generated from the lab work in the form of Western Blot images which I had to interpret and analyse using 'ImageJ', and then I was able to produce graphical data to the key results. I had to present my data and findings to my supervisors and the rest of the lab group on a weekly basis during group meetings, where I also participated in the group journal club.

I worked as a production operative where I was part of a team that had to manage the production line to produce bottles containing the right number of supplements. These bottles would then need to be packaged in boxes before filling out the paper work to send it out into the warehouse. It was a fast paced environment that was also physically demanding as I had to be on my feet all day lifting and moving heavy boxes. Communication with colleagues was vital to ensure a smooth working process, as a lapse in concentration or communication could result in product being wasted and not correctly packaged. I worked at this job over multiple summer and Christmas holidays from university as a chance to make use of my time to exchange my experience and gain some financial independence.

Education

I am currently at the University of Warwick attaining my masters in Biomedical Science, where I have undertaken a research project as part of my dissertation, as well as being able to develop my technical skills to write up lab reports and interpret and analyse data from experiments and published research papers.
