About Alexa Yapp:

Hello, I’m Alexa, a graduate in Interior Design and Styling at the Arts University Plymouth. Translating my ideas and concepts into tangible projects has been a keen interest of mine, inspiring new ideas and confidence in my abilities.

I am dedicated to designing spaces that leave a lasting, positive impact on my clients, as I firmly believe in the transformative power of thoughtful and well-considered design to enhance the well-being and overall experiences of individuals and groups. With a focus on functionality and efficiency, I carefully craft spaces that harmonise both form and function inspired by Scandinavian design principles. By prioritising practical layouts, I aim to create environments that not only have visual appeal but also optimise usability and comfort, designing spaces that complement the clients lifestyle rather than disrupting their everyday flow. I seek to establish harmonious relationships between elements within a space, fostering a sense of balance and coherence that enhances the overall user experience.

As I look ahead, my vision is to delve into a mixture of residential and commercial design opportunities. I aspire to create spaces that not only captivate and inspire but also significantly enhance the experience of users and clients who interact with my designs. My goal is to leave a lasting impression by designing environments that evoke emotion, foster productivity, and ultimately improve the overall quality of life for those who inhabit them.

From homes and hotels, to cafes, spas and retail, I’m passionate about enhancing user experiences and creating memorable, impactful designs that positively influence people’s lives. In all my past projects, I have integrated psychological considerations into my designs. Drawing from my background in psychology, I am deeply fascinated by the profound impact that design elements—such as colours, textures, room volumes, and shapes—can have on the human mind. This unique perspective informs my approach to project development, allowing me to create spaces that not only fulfil functional requirements but also resonate on a deeper, emotional level. By prioritising the psychological well-being of users, I strive to differentiate myself as a designer who prioritises human experiences and meaningful interactions within built environments.

Experience

During my three years at university, I have collaborated with industry professionals and live clients on numerous projects. These include designing a hospital concept for The Mustard Tree, writing a magazine article, and conducting multiple photoshoots for a local ceramicist and woodworker. I also designed a commercial space for a florist, among many other projects.

Additionally, I completed an internship with Pathfinder Homes, a luxury lodge manufacturer, where I led the development of my own lodge concept. My ongoing work with Pathfinder Homes includes designing showcase posters for their lodges, which are displayed at national shows to highlight their attributes and capture their essence. Furthermore, I have provided branding services for companies on Fiverr.

Education

I recently graduated with first-class honours in Interior Design and Styling BA(Hon) from Arts University Plymouth. Over my three years of study, I managed a variety of projects independently and as part of a team, spanning residential, commercial, styling, event planning, and branding domains.

Year one I designed a cafe and cancer research hospital. Year two I designed a magazine, with multiple photoshoots and trend forecasting, a series of pods designed for wellbeing within the workplace, organised a design trade show, and a wedding venue. Finally in my third and final year I designed a tiny eco home / lodge and a commercial retail site with the addition of a florist space, both designed under passive house building standards, while writing a publication about the passivhaus standard.
