Alfredo Maria Gravagnuolo
About Alfredo Maria Gravagnuolo:
Genuinely curious, logical and systematic thinker with strong analytical skills, the commitment and drive to overcome complex problems with innovation and determination. My favourite words are people, vision, interdisciplinarity and integrity; fostering research impact in the real world by turning invention ideas into products
Scientifically speaking, I aim to characterise and manipulate the physical, chemical and biological attributes of bio-macromolecules & nanoparticles at the bio-interface to develop and commercialise, sustainable nano-biotechnology, diagnostics, processes, medicines, new products and services that will improve the quality of human life
Experience
Freelance
2020-present Scientific consultant in nano-biotech, IVD, and pharma. 2023, Member of the “Alacrita Specialist Network”. In 2021, redacted the “Technology and innovation road map: 2D materials for biotechnology and medicine”, for the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC), pointing out opportunities for investments in a Biomed Lab. In 2020-2021, obtained a small research grant for rapid IVD from the University of Naples F.II (UNINA)
2011-present Business development: Co-founder of several non-scientific initiatives, including a carpooling service, a not-for profit organisation, and an import/export business, obtaining visibility on newspapers and national TVs
In vitro diagnostics (IVD) industry
2021-2022 Principal Scientist at Vatic Health Ltd. Co-developed a rapid “functional”, point of care test (POCT) for “virus infectivity”. The proprietary nanotechnology held by a start-up in Oxford, mimics the binding of infectious virions to cells in a lateral flow assay. Contributed to: R&D; tech-transfer; V&V; QC; the quality management system (QMS) compliant with ISO 13485 / 21 CFR 820 for medical devices; FDA-EUA submission
2020-2021 Data Scientist at Lighthouse Labs Network. Led a project at the National Testing Programme for COVID-19, GOV-UK, tracking the SARS-CoV-2 Alpha variant in real-time via millions of PCR tests. Contributed to: data governance through the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS); Quality Control (QC) of PCR mass testing; the QMS compliant with ISO 15189 for medical laboratories, towards the UKAS accreditation
Senior academic appointments in nanobiotechnology and nanomedicine
2021-present Invited Visiting Lecturer in IVD & immunobioengineering. School of Medicine, European University Cyprus
2019-present Guest Associate Editor of Nanobiotechnology for the Swiss journal "Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology". ISSN: 2296-4185. Topic: Biointerfacing 2D Nanomaterials and Engineered Heterostructures
2017-2020 Postdoctoral Research Associate in Nanomedicine at the University of Manchester and National Graphene Institute, UK, liaising with the Nobel Prize winner Sir. Konstantin Novoselov and AstraZeneca. Focused on a drug delivery formulation for cancer immunotherapy that capitalises on the two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial “graphene oxide” as nanocarrier. Furthermore, developed antimicrobial membranes for wound care applications
2015-2017 Postdoctoral Research Associate in Nanobiotechnology at the University of Naples “Federico II”, Italy. Launched a research line focused on the sustainable production of biohybrid 2D nanomaterials (graphene and MoS2) for biotechnological applications (diagnostics & medicine) attracting long-lasting funding. Investigated stability of self-assembling polypeptides, aggregation into functional amyloids, and their biomedical applications
Academic scientific production
2008-present Obtained four research grants, in the range of £15-150k. Published 20 scientific articles, cited >450 times (Google Scholar h-index 14) by Science, Nature Protocols, Nature communications, etc. Awarded with a certificate for outstanding contribution in reviewingfor “Biosensors and Bioelectronics”, Elsevier. Presented >25 communications at symposia, at seven events to lay people, broadcasted on national TVs and radio shows
Student (BSc, MSc, post-graduate internship, PhD)
Received three scholarships in the range of £4-40k, which supported research studies in nanobiotechnology and medicine, including an internship in Nanomaterial-based biosensors (immunoassays; microarrays; nanofabrication) at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), and one in Cell-based, Immunocytochemistry Assay Development at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), Barcelona, Spain. Obtained distinguished student awards at all levels, at the University of Naples “Federico II”, Italy, investigating polypeptide self-assembly, amyloids, proteomics and sustainable processes for the production and surface immobilisation of nano-biomaterials. In 2004, ranked in the top 30 high school students in Italy, at the Natural Sciences contest, and, in 2005, 2nd out of 738 applicants at the University admission test.
Education
I received three scholarships each in the range of £4-40k, which supported my studies in industrial nano-biotechnology and medicine, including an internship in Cell Assay Development at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), Barcelona, Spain. Obtained special student recognitions at all levels from BSc to MSc and PhD. In 2005 I was ranked 2nd out of 738 at the University Admission Test (Naples, Italy), and in 2004 in top 30 Italian natural science High School Students.
