About Anum Iqbal:
I am a qualified Science Teacher with 6.5 years of experience, specialising in Biology. I have experience teaching in both the UK and in the Middle East, and with a diverse range of students from KS3 through to A Levels. Throughout my career, I have demonstrated success in supporting the academic and practical development of students, with a proven track record of excellent exam results.
In my last position at the BRIT School, I was responsible for delivering lessons and preparing pupils for GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Prior to this, I taught in Qatar, specialising in Biology at GCSE and A level.
In the classroom, my lessons consist of a combination of creative, critical, and engaging activities. I am a strong advocate of student-led learning, believing it encourages greater autonomy and helps ease student transition from the classroom to life after school. Emphasis in my planning is on how I can best facilitate a lesson, where students are active and engaged learners. This includes extended independent tasks, group work, presentation work, role modelling, and class discussions. There is also a major emphasis on students making progress from their starting point in my teaching, adapting my methods to suit the needs of my pupils through appropriate differentiation, and utilising pupil data to gauge progress.
I recognise the importance of promoting the personal development of students through setting targets and providing students with regular high-quality feedback. This is most impactful when done with purpose and dedicated time is put aside for students to respond to feedback, demonstrating that they recognise their mistakes and have made progress in their learning.
I also recognise that the personal development of pupils is not only limited to achieving academic goals but equally to their well-being in and outside of school. In the role of a tutor, I strive to know my students holistically, enhancing and encouraging positive relationships between pupils and their teachers. For example, attending a school concert or production involving a pupil I teach enables me to see their talents outside of the classroom and can be an opportunity to praise their work.
This year, I have also completed an NPQ in Leading Teacher Development, demonstrating that I value my professional growth and am keen to support the development of others.
