About Ben Cronin:

Having recently graduated from the University of West England with a First-Class Honours degree in Building Surveying, I am eager to apply my academic knowledge and practical skills to real-world projects and work towards my ambitions of becoming a chartered surveyor.

My academic journey has equipped me with a solid foundation in building pathology, construction technology, and contract administration. Furthermore, during my studies I gained valuable hands-on experience through a six-week placement at Atkins Realis. My responsibilities included drafting specifications, reviewing surveys and plans, attending APC meetings, and utilising AutoCAD to support various Royal Mail projects. This experience allowed me to develop strong technical skills and a keen eye for detail.

Prior to university, I worked as a skilled labourer for a local builder for 1 ½ years, where I gained hands on experience completing extensive residential renovations and extensions. This hands-on experience has enhanced my understanding of construction methodologies, particularly aspects that are difficult to grasp solely through theoretical learning.

I am currently taking some time to travel around Australia and Asia before committing myself to a graduate role as a building surveyor in September 2025. I am eager to apply my knowledge and skills to real-world projects and contribute to the success of your team.

Experience

Atkins Realis – Building Surveying Placement

During a 6-week paid work placement with the Atkins Réalis, I actively supported the surveying team, gaining insights to their daily activities and client interactions. My responsibilities included drafting specifications, reviewing surveys and plans for accuracy, and regularly attending APC meetings (even presenting once!). Due to my proficient AutoCAD skills, I dedicated significant effort to supporting multiple Royal Mail projects by efficiently annotating plans, making keys for different works packages, writing condensed annotations containing the specifications for repair, and laying the plans out to meet the company’s standards. I received good feedback from my work, leading to continued part-time work through my final year of study (until January 2024).

Skilled Labourer ( 1.5 years )

I worked as a skilled labourer for a local builder – initially part time and then full time during my gap year. As part of a small team, I was involved in all aspects of the builds. In that time, we completed four house extensions, two of which were complete strip-outs and renovations. I was involved in the entire construction process including demolition, digging, and pouring foundations, building masonry and stud walls, installing structural steel beams, laying roof tiles, installing windows and roof lights, boarding and plastering, laying patios, etc. I very much enjoyed this work, and this confirmed and consolidated my ambition to pursue a career in construction

Education

BSc (Hons) Building Surveying - 1st Class (2021-2024)

I recently graduated from the University of the West of England with a First Class Honours degree in Building Surveying.

Throughout my three-year degree, I developed a strong foundation in building science, construction technology, contract administration, property management, and refurbishment management. I applied this knowledge to design and create detailed plans for theoretical commercial and residential projects, overcoming numerous challenges and consistently achieving high standards in my coursework.

To culminate my studies, I undertook a comprehensive 12,000-word dissertation investigating the effectiveness of Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) in reducing carbon emissions within the UK office sector. By conducting in-depth interviews with a building performance academic, sustainable developer, sustainability researcher/journalist, chartered building surveyor, M&E engineer, and two Net Zero consultants, I gathered and analysed primary and secondary data to critically evaluate the MEES regulations and the efficacy of office retrofit projects in achieving Net Zero.

This rigorous academic endeavour pushed me to my limits, enabling me to produce exceptional work that I am incredibly proud of.
