Education
. Conducting immediate assessments of patients using the ABCDE (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure) approach to quickly identify and manage life-threatening conditions. This systematic approach ensures that I rapidly stabilise and prioritise care based on the severity of the patient’s condition. Thus helping me achieve rapid assessment of patients, arrive at a quick working diagnosis, and, where necessary, involve my seniors in the management of patients.
. Providing immediate care for acute and life-threatening conditions. This includes performing emergency procedures such as intubation, inserting intravenous lines, administering medications, suturing wounds, and managing trauma cases, with interventions guided by findings from the ABCDE assessment. And if a patient requires a specialist referral, I am responsible for writing such referrals as well as discharge summaries.
. Working closely with nurses, consultants, paramedics, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care. Effective communication and teamwork are essential for coordinating patient care and ensuring the best outcomes, especially during resuscitation and critical care scenarios. This helps me manage a diverse caseload across all areas of the emergency department, including majors, minors, resuscitation, and paediatric mergency departments,, delivering timely and patient-centred care.
. Teaching and supervising junior doctors, medical students, and other healthcare staff. This includes providing guidance on the ABCDE approach, sharing knowledge, and ensuring adherence to clinical guidelines and protocols to maintain high standards of emergency care. By teaching and mentoring junior staff and medical students, this has been quite helpful in fostering a learning environment that promotes professional development.
. Monitoring patients’ progress and making necessary adjustments to treatment plans. This includes interpreting diagnostic tests, tracking vital signs, and reassessing patients to ensure they are responding appropriately to treatment, particularly focusing on changes in their ABCDE status, therefore ensuring comprehensive patient care and continuity of treatment.
