About Duygu Uner Bahar:
My passion is to progress in the field of biotechnology and my speciality is electrochemical biosensors. I possess a double degree in bioengineering and economics. I am familiar with different cultures having worked with international postdoc research groups. I believe these differences enrich the societies and scientific projects. I have a working permit under my pre-settlement status in the United Kingdom.
I worked as an assistant professor to conduct research on the postdoc biosensor project and on the development of electrochemical potentiometric biosensors. I developed borate-based composite electrodes that allowed direct glucose measurement in blood and used them as detectors in the system. During my doctoral study, I built a system on flow injection analysis (FIA) and studied glucose and glycoproteins (Human serum albumin/fructosamine and HbA1c) measurement in blood with microliter samples. I developed a graphite-oxide-based mini separation column to provide simultaneous measurement. The aim was to reach a qualitative conclusion by evaluating the time they leave the column due to the size of these glycoproteins, based on the principle of chromatographic separation with the FIA system. Developed a silver borate-carbon nanotube-based electrode in my postdoc project, that responded faster. The aim was to measure glucose in the blood in the quiescent phase using a potentiometric measurement system. Both my projects in borate sensor and blood glucose measurement studies, were published in international journals.
Experience
TEACHING
Istanbul Gelisim University/ Turkey Assistant Professor Dr
Worked as an assistant professor at Istanbul Gelisim University. Lectured in chemistry, microbiology and sterilization principles, sterilization and disinfection methods and medical laboratory quality control standards. I have experience in teaching both online and face-to-face. I have received various educational training to provide students with a more effective online experience. Furthermore, I created and managed a university-supported project code DUP-111119-DUB called “Development of Glucose Meter Borate Sensor” at the same time.
MANAGEMENT
Istanbul Gelisim University/ Turkey Board Member
Served on the board of directors of the “Life Sciences and Biomedical Engineering Application and Research Centre”. In the process of establishing an R&D laboratory on behalf of the centre, I provided consultancy on purchasing the necessary chemicals and devices and placing them in the laboratory. I actively contributed to the approval and improvement process of examining projects in the centre and mentored university academic members. I also contributed to the organisation of various e-conferences during the pandemic process by inviting various scientists to the R&D centre.
Istanbul Gelisim University/ Turkey Assistant Manager
Worked as an assistant manager in the “Sustainable Environment and Community Research and Application Centre,” and took an active role in arranging meetings and in determining zero waste policies at the university.
Istanbul Gelisim University/ Turkey Field Editor (1st June 2020 – now)
Worked as the field editor of chemistry in the international engineering journal of the university (International Journal of Engineering Technologies (IJET), ISSN 2149-0104 | e-ISSN 2149-5262).
FUNDED SCIENTIFIC PROJECTS:
Project 1 (1st March 2020-1st December 2020): “Development of Glucose Meter Borate Sensor” supported by Istanbul Gelisim University Life Sciences and Biomedical Engineering Application and Research Centre as a project executive academic member. This project was important as a boron-based biomedical measuring device, due to its rapid results, being portable and economical. Finally, I wrote the related article and published it in the SCI index journal.
Project 2 (1st May 2017-1st Aug 2019): “Development of a New Measurement Method for Measuring Short-, Medium- and Long-Term Blood Glucose Simultaneously” supported by TUBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) as a PhD research fellow. I worked on my PhD thesis and completed the experiment system (flow injection analysing) design and improved the borate-carbon, nanotube-based, ion-selective composite electrode for the project. Completed all of the potentiometric measurements and evaluation of the results. I wrote and arranged all of the project reports and administered the essential purchasing processes for project equipment. Finally, I wrote the related international article with my supervisor and the other participants as a team.
Project 3 (1st Nov 2014-1st Feb 2015): “Developing a New Early Diagnosis Method Using Potentiometric Ion Selective Cobalt Sensor System in Myocardial Ischemia,” supported by TUBITAK as an Msc student fellow. Attended the preparing ion-selective cobalt electrode and potentiometric measurements of the experiment results. I worked on Ischemia Modified Albumin (IMA) and cobalt combination.
