About ellen mak:

Having been influenced by my mother, who is an SEN (Special Education Needs) teacher, and having overcome my own challenges in completing exams, my desire to become a primary school teacher has been deeply ingrained since a young age. Although I am currently in my final year studying Sport Management at Coventry University, achieving a minimum of a 2:1 has always been my goal, as it demonstrates my determination, perseverance, resilience, and self-discipline.
Throughout my course, I have acquired numerous relevant skills related to teaching. Education is not only about the progress one makes in their learning journey, regardless of their starting point, but also about creating an inclusive and safe learning environment in the classroom. Team sports provide a perfect example of this concept: every position carries specific duties and responsibilities, along with unique strengths and abilities. Demonstrating team spirit is both challenging and attainable. I am motivated and determined to bring together a group of individuals with diverse minds and characteristics, assisting each individual in reaching their full potential. This principle applies to both education and sports.

Experience

During my time at university, I had the opportunity to undertake a 40-day placement in a school, which was related to early-age teaching. This placement was an optional module that allowed me to gain valuable experience. Throughout the placement, I observed lessons in Key Stage 1 and 3, such as English, Maths, and Physical Education. I also engaged in discussions with teachers regarding lesson planning, created plans for students with SEN, and provided suggestions on how to address their specific needs. I was exposed to various teaching methodologies and classroom behavioral management techniques, including a firm yet empathetic approach. I witnessed the impact of different class sizes, from normal class settings to small groups and one- to-one training. Moreover, I recognised the importance of providing constructive and precise feedback, which immediately boosts students' self-esteem. Additionally, I learned how to handle unexpected situations in the classroom.
