Emily Donaghy

Hey. I am Emily. I am 27 years old and have been a respiratory nurse for 4 years drafted in during the covid 19 pandemic. During the Covid 19 pandemic, a government scheme was created to fulfil the urgent need for qualified nurses to join the frontline. The scheme allowed students to leave university 6 months early to undertake an acute hospital paid placement. When presented with this opportunity I rose to the challenge and was excited to put my learning into practice.

Now as part of the Respiratory Team, I often find myself providing care under immense pressure in unforeseen circumstances; still maintaining a high standard of patient centred care. This was recognised by a patient who I cared for during her recovery from Covid 19. She took the time to share her story and gratitude for both my mentor and I on Good Morning Britain.

I am currently working as a Band 5 Registered Nurse on Gate 45A Respiratory.

Having now worked on 45A as a Health Care Assistant, Student and Registered Nurse. I am now ready for a new challenge to develop within a new area of respiratory team taking a wider interest in lung cancer. I have the necessary skills to excel at this role. I have strong knowledge of the human respiratory system and its associated diseases. I am able to implement care, undergo acute assessments, provide acute support such as inhaler technique, home NIV, delivery of prescribed oxygen therapy, interpret data such as blood gas analysis and vital observations and have additional private time reading gaining knowledge around support, relevant information and advice offered during investigations, diagnosis and treatment.

I have recently completed the MY Assessor programme in collaboration with HEE practice, Educator and assessor programme (PEAP). This enables me to sign students of on their placements; a position I hold with great responsibility.

I have held the ‘In Charge’ Nursing Role for over 2 years allowing myself to lead the nursing team and ensuring efficient operations on the ward. This role allows me to oversee patient care, managing staff and organising work loads, providing guidance and support to staff on the ward.

Additionally, I have recently spoke with the respiratory clinical educator to widen my respiratory experience gaining a post graduate qualification, something I am very eager to complete.
