About Ewan Gornell:
As of 2023, I have been a full-time teaching assistant in a high school, the purpose of this job was to save as much money as possible, upskill myself and help people using my knowledge and personal experiences/skills. I have been torn between ambition and devoting myself to vulnerable people, I have reached what I believe is a pivotal moment in my life and I’m ready to pursue my envisioned future. Around the age of 17, I realised that it was possible to achieve what I thought was unattainable, I didn’t have to spend my whole life working to pay off a mortgage, I could instead use the plethora of information available to me online to build my own future. Money to me represents freedom from the cycle that haunts my family, I am not materialistic and would rather invest money I make, work hard now to make life easier when I’m older. I predict that once I’m in a place where I’m financially established, I will go back to helping young people. I have been studying copy writing this year, as well as years of practice on TradingView and various trading exchanges, I see these as the tools to carve my future.
Experience
Skills
- Motivation- I am not happy if I’m not productive, this means I can be trusted when left to a task.
- Hyperfocus- once I find a subject that interests me I become absorbed totally e.g. using TradingView’s pinescript I learnt how to code a trading bot in two days. Trading is when I feel my sharpest.
- Empathy- my upbringing and time working with young people has taught me understanding and value in people
- Learning- I am a fast learner and use my free time educating myself on beneficial topics
- Copy writing- I have recently learnt the value in writing good copy, I am currently reading some books and convene with a local businessman for advice
- Trading- I have basic trading knowledge and understand the key principles, I have been interested in this for many years and I go through phases of being totally consumed by it, I see this as my future, I am yet to implement a successful strategy that suits my lifestyle.
Teaching Assistant 2023-Present
- Worked 1-1 with a special needs child with severe needs, successfully managing his needs (which were abundant) and outburst, working with a pupil as volatile as he can be, I believe I am patient and diplomatic
- I regularly come across safeguarding concerns, it is reassuring that students feel comfortable around me, this demonstrates I am responsible and empathetic and the students see me as someone they trust
- Days can be hectic, and I occasionally have to miss breaks/lunches and volunteer to help with extra- curricular activities, showing I am committed to my role
- At times the role can be pressured, I work with a number of children with disorders and emotional issues, sometimes they can be angry and upset all at the same time and may take it out on me, I must to stay level-headed and calm at all times.
Library Ambassador 2022-2023
- I worked here whilst I was a student, I took up as many shifts as possible at unsociable hours if needed, I became a trusted member of staff and was asked to work with the chancellor on a couple of occasions
- At times, I was solely responsible for the largest library at my university, I would lock-up, rent equipment, loan books, it would get very busy at times and I never had an issue.
Customer Assistant Specialist (Booths) December 2019-June 2021
- I learnt the importance of punctuality
- Working for the first time in a professional team
- Booths is a slightly more high-end supermarket, this required me to have knowledge on many of the products, believe me there were many
- There customer base was also older, so I would often spend my time chatting to old ladies whilst I was on the till and helping them pack there shopping (this was during covid, so it was the only socialising many of them did).
- As with all retail jobs, you receive unwarranted abuse, this taught me a valuable skill, stay calm and smile, I never engaged in arguments and I recgonise where people’s frustrations emerge.
- I was always put on the till as I was friendly and would occasionally receive compliments from customers who contacted HR
Events Management 2021-2022
- Whilst at university I decided to set up an events management business, I gathered a couple friends that I thought could bring a unique perspective and set about creating a brand. I had a logo and some promotional flyers designed to a professional level.
- The first event was promoted as an open mic at a reputable grass roots music venue in Liverpool, we gathered 150 people to the first event (capacity was 100). I believe this shows a desire to succeed and leadership skills.
FA Referee; Lancashire & Blackburn 2017 – 2021
- Refereeing gave me the ability to manage and organise busy and heated environments with not only players, but also coaches and parents who are often upset. This taught me proffessionality and humility (I have also done many volunteer refereeing roles, showing I am more interested in providing a good service).
- This was my first job, I saved up all my birthday money from previous years, to pay for this qualification
- I was also picked up by the FA staff and was asked to work with Blackburn Rovers youth team, where I would turn up in shirt and tie before every game
Assistant in a small clothing business. 2015-2020 (family business)
- I play a frequent role in the work. When doing events i.e festivals, I was often left in control of the stall for several hours, this taught me to use card readers and retail skills.
- I would regularly communicate with the customers to help provide them with the best garments and sizes, my first taste of sales skills
