Fahmida Ahmed

I am a BSc Psychology graduate from the University of Manchester looking for volunteering opportunities within the mental health field, ranging from areas to do with talking therapies/counselling to support work to helping conduct research studies. Future career goals include working in the field of psychotherapy.

Throughout my time of being a support worker, a challenging yet very rewarding job, I would describe myself as quite an empathetic person that is ready for a test. Working with children and young people with Autism has given me the ability and confidence to communicate with a range of people, particularly in times of distress when comfort and reassurance is crucial. Volunteering for a student listening service has also helped with my communication as remaining non-directive and non-judgmental are key factors in helping vulnerable service users through difficult times. 

My aspirations to pursue a career in psychotherapy stem from interests in how our brain processes different events which can ultimately change our outlook on our lives. More often than not, we are susceptible to sweeping certain events and experiences under the carpet. I believe through the use of talking therapies, particularly client centred therapy, we can determine crucial factors that impact our satisfaction of life. I would be grateful to have the opportunity to help people in this manner, especially working with those that struggle to receive these services due to unequal opportunities.
