Experience
Since I was a child, I had always wanted to become a teacher. The character Miss Honey from the film ‘Matilda’ inspired me, as I wanted to help children achieve their best as well as allowing them to feel valued in the classroom no matter what their background is.
Before my Teaching degree, I studied Health and Social care which I experienced working in schools as well as care homes which allowed me to pick up various skills and
qualities such as patience and effective planning. As well as these experiences, I have spent my life around children due to having a large extended family, so I would plan activities such as painting and role-play when babysitting them. At University. I studied Primary Education (with QTS), where I experienced teaching in EYFS, KS1 and KS2.
The nature of my work in education has prepared me for this position. My interest in teaching English to speakers of other languages has stimulated me to specialise in English pedagogy as part of my Education degree. For this module, I designed several sequences of lessons where I had used traditional stories to stimulate children’s imagination, logical thinking, and empathy. Through the course of the lessons, the children progressed from reading the text to producing their own text and improving their writing skills. I have developed skills in planning for students with special needs, liaising with the teaching assistant. I developed special approaches for some students who are struggling for example using pictures to remember a poem.
In my teaching practice I faced some challenges, such as maintaining the pace of the class and overcame them by using a problem solving approach for example: using a reward system, finding out about the children’s accustomed routines and improvising with tools available within the classroom (e.g. tambourine!).
In addition, I am very interested in encouraging students to view things from different points of view in order to expand their thinking, especially in English and Religious Studies. A key part of my career is helping students reach their potential, which I work towards by focusing on their individual needs even when teaching a whole class.
As shown by my experience in schools, I am enthusiastic about education and always strive to do the best for my students. I am able to take on responsibility for learning and have experience of successfully managing a class. I also have the enthusiasm and determination to ensure that I make a success of this role.
