Experience
In my role as student social worker on final 100 days placement at a statutory settings of a local Authority working with the substance misuse team supporting people with substance misuse issues and alcohol dependency. I started my placement in October, 2020 which was during COVID 19 lockdown and restriction characterised by having to work from home sometimes. I had virtual meetings with my PE and other members of staff but did not get to meet service users physically as it took a while to my work phone, laptop and login sorted due to sparse local authority IT staff members working onsite. In the meantime, my PE would send me some reading materials to familiarise myself with what the placement entails. I have supported adults with dependency problems under the Care Act 2014, Mental Health Act if they lack capacity. I have attended meetings with my PE to outline my learning needs, have weekly supervision to discuss my progressions and identified area of improvements. I joined the group at harbour where service users discuss their progress and experiences of funded rehab. Attending these group sessions has helped me to learn more about substance misuse and how the local authority teams and agencies supports service users manage their substance misuse. I have done work shadow with qualified social workers for welfare checks and advocate for service users subjected to discrimination, bullying and abuse to ensure their fundamental human rights are not infringed upon. As I progressed in this placement, with support from my PE and other qualified social workers within the team, I began to write case notes; this includes records of works undertaken with service users from time to time. I shadowed qualified social workers conduct assessments of service users to obtain information for their eligibility for services which I have become very confident of carrying out on my own. I have learnt to make use of both verbal and non verbal communication skills, active listening whilst showing empathy to service users. To seek permission if they are willing to speak to me about their issues, encourage them to share their lived experience in other to support them prepare a case at the panel for funded rehab. Whilst carrying out assessment, I have made good use of my understanding of confidentiality and GDPR to reassure the individual of confidentiality and disclosure, seek consent to make referral to other professional in the case of multi agency involvement by offering them written confidentiality statement to read, agree or disagree then sign and file on the Mosiac system for the purpose of information sharing.
