About Harvey Herring:
As a Chemist at Bureau Veritas Group, my focus is on applying the laboratory skills developed through my academic journey studying Physics at the University of Nottingham. My role is shaped by active learning and precise application of scientific principles, ensuring meticulous execution in every task.
Building on a foundation laid during A Levels in Maths and Sciences, my career trajectory is aimed toward the Chemical Engineering industry. My motivation lies in mastering complex challenges, underpinned by a commitment to results-driven performance and a passion for science.
Experience
So far, during my time at Bureau Veritas Group in Immingham, I have played a key role in rebuilding and renewing a number of Excel-based computer systems. On top of this, I have focused on the maintenance, repair and calibration of current instruments, ensuring such details meticulously updated within instrument records.
My training has provided me a comprehensive understanding of industry-standard tests on petroleum products and their derivatives, including residual oils, middle distillate oils and white oils. Given the close proximity to multiple different petroleum refineries, I have also developed a decent insight into common refinery configurations/operations.
This experience has developed my analytical and problem-solving skills in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and provided me with a solid grasp of quality standards such as ISO 17025. Additionally, I have also gained a deep understanding of common safe practices, effective housekeeping and organisational skills within a laboratory setting.
Education
Following my A-Level results, I enrolled into the University of Nottingham to study Theoretical Physics, MSci. However, after finishing my first year and getting part way through my second year of study, I decided that university was not the route I wanted to take into a career.
Despite stepping back from university, the experience I gained from studying there was invaluable. It taught me more about how I can learn more effectively as well as how to manage my deadlines in a more organised fashion. I developed many of my skills during my time at UoN, including applying complex mathematics to produce a Python program for data analysis, i.e., producing a memory efficient solution to calculate and plot large amounts of data, in two or three dimensions, using a given formula.
