Jan Roberts

I currently work as a Staff Nurse at Furness General Hospital in Barrow in Furness. I’ve been qualified approximately 40 years and still enjoy the challenges that nursing brings. 

I currently work on the Elective Orthopaedic Unit which is now situated on the Day Surgery Unit at FGH.  I care for patients who are admitted for major orthopaedic surgery, predominantly hip and knee replacements. I look after the patient from admission, pre and post operatively until they are ready for discharge. I also sometimes work on the Day Surgery Unit caring for a  variety of surgical patients.
Previously I worked on the Patient Progression Unit, the PPU is a 4 bedded step up/step down unit for any patients undergoing surgical procedures. 
I am responsible for taking charge of EOU on a very regular basis, supporting junior staff and liaising with other members of our team. I have many transferable skills, venepunture, cannulation, catheterisation and using ANTT.

Although it is a few years since I qualified, l have kept up to date with all my mandatory  training, also I have completed my  Mentors training and helped support students in their placements. I am currently waiting to undergo training  in the use of Epidurals, PCA machines and Entonox.
