John Jakobsen

I’m a diligent and ambitious mechanical engineering graduate who has completed a Mechatronics and Robotics MSc. During my education, I have acquired a diverse range of technical knowledge, from computational fluid dynamics to embedded systems design, and built up experience in integrating digital and mechanical systems. Part-time work has developed my ability to solve problems creatively and effectively collaborate with team members under time pressure. Currently seeking an engaging mechatronics graduate role with opportunities for growth and progression.

2020-2021 – COVID-19 Testing Operative – Sodexo
Assisted the national effort in combating the spread of coronavirus:
• Administered up to 70 oral and nasal antigen swab tests to members of the public per day.
• Communicated effectively with difficult subjects who were nervous and/or combative.
• Applied strict infection-control procedures to ensure the safety of subjects and staff.

2017 – Sales Assistant – Tesco
Accepted a part-time retail position at Tesco:
• Replenished stock, managed inventory and manned checkouts in a busy Tesco Extra store.
• Engaged with dozens of customers per day – for example, dealing with attempts to buy age
restricted items.
• Effectively collaborated with team members to finish tasks before the store was closed.

2014-2016 – Assistant Maintenance Technician – Silver Bay Holiday Village
Managed the upkeep of several luxury holiday lodges:
• Performed essential maintenance work (e.g. repairs, painting, gardening) on up to three lodges a
day.
• Developed an appreciation for attention to detail and high standards of work.
• Worked to a tight schedule to ensure properties were fit for the next set of residents on time.

• Completed a dissertation on the design, manufacture and testing of an Arduino-based miniature
pipe inspection robot.
• Worked as part of a team of three to design and program the game ‘Pong’ on an ARM Cortex-A9
processor in C using Eclipse.
• Worked as part of a team of two to design and program the game ‘Snake’ on an Altera Cyclone V FPGA in Verilog using Intel Quartus Prime.
• Produced a detailed design report for a soft exo-skeleton orthosis for use in rehabilitating stroke patients as part of a team of five.
• Compiled a report on the application of various machine learning techniques such as Artificial Neural Networks to the problem of sEMG signal classification as part of a team of five.

BEng Mechanical Engineering at Swansea University

• Operated a variety of engineering equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, tensile/Charpy/Brinell testing machines, wind tunnels and industrial robots.
