About Kenneth Till:
First things first, my first name is Kenneth, my second is Steven. I like to be called and am always referred to as Steve. That has got that out of the way.
Born and bred in Hull. Comprehensive education however no certificates achieved as staying on at school though was frowned upon by my father. “Get out and earn a living,” was his mantra. So I did - and joined the Army to escape his grip.
That was in 1969. Haven’t done bad since despite the lack of certificates.
Left the Army (Coldstream Guards) in 1971/2 and made my way in the big wide world. Worked in commerce, hospitality, education and training and finally sports journalism.
Not bad for a kid from the mean streets of Hull without a GCSE to my name.
Went from scrubbing walls in a hotel kitchen to being the horse racing editor for the national news agency, the Press Association.
My first post with the PA lasted from 1992 to 2003 when I originally retired and went out to pasture in Spain. However, my marriage broke up so I returned to England and became a private hire driver in Hull.
Word soon went out that I was back and I was head hunted to return to the racing world by the now defunct Turf TV who beamed the sport to the country’s betting shops. In fact I was employee No. 1.
I say they are now defunct but before their demise the staff were transferred to a new employer under the TUPE regulations. That new employer was PA Media. Yes I was back with the Press Association.
Stayed with the PA as a Raceday Manager providing betting data from racecourses which was transferred to the nation’s betting shops and all other media organisations worldwide and provided the basis for the starting price odds of all horses in a particular race.
However, to do the job I monitored the on-course betting markets which COVID put paid to due to racing then being held behind closed doors.
To cut a long story short staff were moved to work from the company’s main office and retained there with the necessary markets now off course, removing the need for on-course staff.
So in December I was made redundant and decided to retire for the second time.
However, retirement is not really in my dictionary so I am looking for further gainful employment.
My time is currently spent performing my hobbies of photography - landscape, portrait, sport and music - perfectly happy to take anything on, writing, allotment, sport and keeping fit.
Despite the lack of a formal education, I feel I am skilled in all sorts of areas and have dealt throughout my career with many types of people from Royalty (yes, the upper echelons) to others who perhaps through no fault of their own have needed a leg up in life.
I have written and had published a book (I ghosted a successful autobiography of an ex-rugby league player) and was the first ever PA reporter to cover the Paralympics (Sydney 2000).
From that you will note that I am well-traveled, having visited 43 countries.
I’ll stop there but if you can use my services feel free to contact me and as I have always done will offer them with the same type of enthusiasm that I have always shown through my career.
Experience
After leaving the Army in 1972, I had a variety of positions in the field of education and training. I was a tutor in the YTS scheme in the mid 80’s where I gained a City&Guilds certificate in the field of Youth Training.
In the early 90’s I entered the world of sports journalism when I joined the Press Association primarily as a horse racing journalist but covered other sports to including rugby league and boxing. I was also the first ever PA journalist to cover the Paralympics when I covered 17 sports in 11 days at the Sydney Games in 2000.
Whilst at the PA I rose through the ranks to the position of Racing Editor with a permanent staff of up to 11 together with a host of freelance staff. It was my job to arrange the coverage of all British and Irish racing together with major events round the world including the Breeder’s Cup in the United States, Australia’s Melbourne Cup and the Hong Kong International meeting.
Having relinquished the post of Racing Editor in 2003 I took early retirement in 2003 only to be head hunted by Turf TV a company which provided telecasts from racecourses to the country’s betting shops. I took on the role of Raceday Manager providing on course betting details to customers worldwide which eventually resulted in providing the starting price of every horse in each race.
Turf TV were eventually taken over by the Press Association and I was transferred across by TUPE and once again became an employee of the PA until made redundant following Covid in December, 2012. Once again I retired however I have struggled in retirement and am keen to get back into employment.
