Experience

With a career spanning over 20 years in railway signal testing, faulting and maintenance, leading teams in testing activities and liaising with clients. Starting off as a support fitter on the Northern line back in 1999, I quickly progressed and passed out a Signal Technical Officer in 2000. Upon passing out, I took up a position as a first line response T.O at North Greenwich on the Jubilee Line. My main duties were responding to any signal, points or track failures in traffic hours. In engineering hours, I would carry out maintenance works in my allocated section. This early role gave me a good foundation where I managed to get exposure to many different types of assets and familiarise with the maintenance engineering standards, and work under pressure in a public domain when attending signal failures.

In 2004 I left LU to pursue more diverse works as a contractor. My works was extremely varied, from carrying out maintenance inspections on behalf of London Underground Chief Engineer’s directorate, working on large track renewal shutdowns within possessions (BTR’s), to working on major projects within the Test & Commissioning department. I’ve worked on some big projects on the London Underground such as the Victoria Line Upgrade, SSL track circuit upgrade, Jubilee and Northern Line Upgrade, and the 4 Line Modernisation. I was also involved in the Taipei Taoyuan MRT project (TTYMRT) in Taiwan with Siemens in 2014/2015. Being on these large projects allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of signalling principles and safety design principles.

My time on these major projects have seen me leading teams and carrying out signalling testing works as well as providing mentoring to junior staff where required. Throughout the project lifecycle, I have worked alongside and liaised with other engineering disciplines such as Design, Installation and Engineering to resolve issues.

Having spent over 20 years on the railways I wanted to diversify and keep my skills relevant as technology moves on and prepare for the digital railway. Therefore, I embarked on learning I.T – initially specifically networking. Enrolling on a Cisco Certified Networking Associate course initially and using tools such as Packet Tracer to help my understanding and complement what was taught.

Currently I hold an Institute of Railway Signal Engineers License – category 1.3.170 (Functional Tester), but I believe that upskilling is important in this age of the digital railway and that to stay relevant I had the desire to go and learn new technologies. I believe learning and adapting is what will push me forward in the industry.
