Mandeep Ginda

hardworking, enthusiastic, and outgoing mature student currently in my final year at Glasgow Caledonian University studying MEng Mechanical and Power Plant Systems Engineering. After this year I wish to progress onto a suitable graduate scheme that will propel my chosen career in the sustainable energy generation and distribution sectors and eventually gain my chartered engineering status. During my course, I have learned about energy distribution and generation which includes renewable sources such as wind and solar. I have enjoyed researching different energy resources, new generation storage technologies and learning about the characteristics of distributed generation and problems with grid network integration. This interest has driven me to do my 4th-year project on emerging energy storage technologies that support increased renewable energy penetration. I have also had the opportunity to take part in an industry project during International Project Week 2020 at Saxion University in the Netherlands and this year for my Masters group project I am working in collaboration with Katrick Technologies to produce a prototype impeller design for their thermal energy harvesting engine.

In 2012 I worked with my brothers to open the Nakodar Grill Restaurant, after years of hard work we were able to gain a good reputation and even won the Best Indian Restaurant in Scotland Award 2014 & 2016. I had several duties including training staff, stock management, food preparation, health & hygiene, staff organisation, cash handling, equipment maintenance, etc. I decided to leave the family business in 2017 to pursue further education in engineering. While studying at college I decided to find employment in the security sector due to the flexibility to work around my classes which allowed me to give full attention to my studies. While working in security I worked at various venues in and around Glasgow and Edinburgh with duties including supervising entry to venues, searching for prohibited items, conflict management, fire
safety and emergency first aid. During lockdown I decided to start working in retail for Mitie Security where I dealt with anti-social behavior, loss prevention, fire and covid safety. I transferred to work for HM Revenue & Customs where I currently supervise secure entry, deliveries, contractors, and visitors on site. I was recently accepted for a part-time technician’s assistant job at EWT UK. I have completed my GWO training, and my duties include helping technicians carry out emergency maintenance tasks on the different models of EWT’s direct-drive wind turbines that are situated across the Central Belt and East Coast of Scotland.
