Mario Lima
Engineering / Architecture
About Mario Lima:
Antenna Engineer Professional committed to achieving results. In addition to strong Antenna design background, proficient in modelling antennas primarily in CST, HFSS, and alternatively FEKO. Experienced in antenna measurements utilising Near-Field Systems Interface and Farfield Ranges. This has been augmented with intensive research and design of Phased Array Antennas at Ku/Ka band, enhanced with Meta-materials such as EBG, DNG, AMC, ELC, and FSS structures, with the latest addition of dielectric “lens” antennas - not phased arrays elements but achieve similar results.
Mentor of senior and graduate antenna engineers, and previous liaison with CST support team in UK and Germany.
Experience
Career Summary
September 2023 – Current Senior Lens Antenna Engineer Architecture
ALL.SPACE
• Research and investigation through lens level simulations and assessment of hybrid aperture at Ku
and Ka bands, multiple beams and high scan angles.
• Lens antenna analysis and simulations (HFSS), and optimisation simulations of dielectric lenses effects
ie refraction and reflections.
• Support design for manufacture through analysis and simulations of design modifications, and
fabrication challenges.
• Develop solutions in the optics design process.
• Presenting regularly to the global innovation team on results at lens (system) level that includes feed
(antenna), and gives insight to the terminal level performance.
October 2017 – September 2023 Principal Antenna Engineer
Leonardo
• Lead antenna designer and adviser on Ka/Ku band circularly polarised phased array antenna with
wide bandwidth and scan volume - Project Tempest.
• Antenna lead on AH64-E project currently being developed by Boeing for UK MOD.
o Assess and advice on antenna performance on new platform – coverage, probability of
detection, obstruction, co-site interference, etc
o Technical exchange with counterpart in Boeing through development stage.
• Actively researching metamaterials/metasurfaces and their properties with the aim to expand on
the limitations in bandwidth, beam steering and low observability (RCS). Successful measurement
campaign with promising results.
• Mentoring and training senior and graduate antenna engineers in antenna theory and simulation.
• Managed Applied Physics PhD students by pursuing innovative ideas based on current trends in
metamaterial technology which are applicable to Airspace and Defence antenna performance
figures of merit.
• Support to defence and airborne customers on antenna location and coverage on their
platform(s) based on Leonardo DAS (Defence Aid System.)
